Hechuan is 20 minutes by fast train from Chongqing North station. Still a way to the centre of Chongqing from there. The train line also serves Chengdu the other way.

Chongqing metro line 1 is still being extended so that the terminus will be Hechuan. Don’t know how far they have dug through the mountains seperating Chongqing and Hechuan but it’s way off completion.

Driving through Hechuan I saw three people... but they were in the car with me. The stereotypical ‘ghost’ town. No problem finding accommodation though if you need to.

For some paradise for others hell.

Well a 'ghost town' may just be what a peripatetic ghost needs.

Just a question, in a job application, the onus is placed on the applicant to sign the contract asap, once she/he has been 'approved' by the new employer, but I think the applicant should also do her due diligence in finding out the basics re the new job offer before signing on the dotted line.

Re - the contract:

In this case - a couple of red flags - one was a penalty breach of 30,000 renminbi ($5000) for breach of contract. This seems like an extraordinary amount for a contract where the pay is 8000 yuan month. In the teacher's last job, the penalty breach was just 10,000 yuan ($1500) and rarely - if ever - enforced. In fact, the teacher left her/his last position with a month's salary bonus.....given as a freebie, which was quite welcome.

Another caveat - no pay for the month of February, even if the teacher renews contract the following year. There is a 3000 yuan bonus for Chinese New Year, though, and the stated vacation time is one month.

In addition - after one year successful completion of contract - a 10,000 yuan flight allowance - one way (not two way). This seems illogical - why one way only?

Other caveats - staying well past the finish of exams, to fulfill other duties, even when all exams are done and marked. This curbs leave time down to a minimum. Not complying with this constitutes 'breach of contract.'

Other red flags include the apartment being off limits for Chinese friends. This seems unreasonable as well. I could go on.

Ask the school why only one way. It's enough to pay for a ticket in any case. On your other points, negotiate them to your satisfaction or look for another job opportunity. It's a no-brainer really.

Yeah, why bother with this kind of stuff? The job doesn't sound very good anyway. 8000 is barely above average, and then no February pay? That's crap. Adding a 'New Year bonus' is ridiculous. What they mean is, they'll pay less than half your salary for a month that almost all Chinese universities pay in full. 10 month contracts are totally standard with no provisions for renewal or not. Typically a renewal then merits a 12 month contract with summer pay also.

Staying past exam finishing? For what? I didn't do anything except turn in the grades. As long as they had them they could care less what I did or where I was as long as I was back before the first class period of spring.

And no Chinese people in the apartment? Sounds like one of the control freak places that will watch every movement coming and going. No thanks. My apartment means I can bring over who I want when I want. What business is it of theirs? I'm sure they're quite 'concerned' about the predatory Western male defiling the virtue of Chinese women, of course.

Why waste your time with this? Aren't there a million Chinese unis who will hire anyone with a white face who can qualify for a visa?

Well a mate of mine, who teaches German there, got me onto this gig, but for some reason he is less than forthcoming about the ins and outs of the job. It is a Sino-German type of collaboration, between this outfit and one in Germany.

Thanks for the input.
