I remember asking for advice about living and working in Vietnam around 9 months ago and I received mixed messages (sometimes from people who had never even worked here). So I have decided to leave a brief review of my experiences in Saigon, Vietnam.
TEFL experience:
Studied with a company called AVSE which are a respected company within Saigon. The course was 4 weeks long and gave us 12 hours teaching experience and 16 hours worth of in class observations. Met a ton of incredible people while doing the course and some fantastic experiences. Learnt how to structure a lesson and how to do give a relatively engaging class. Recruiters visited the school on the last week and actively sought our services.
Work:
I was recruited by ILA to work primarily in public schools. They offered a week of training (paid), not to mention extensive support any time its been needed.
The job itself is fantastic - the kids enthusiastic - the subject relatively simple to teach.
I've begun to cover centre classes: both young learners and ielts. Its a little more challenging but each week I imporve and develop as a teacher.
Pay is fantastic. I work 18 hours per week and recieve over 35 million dong per month (extra hours are always availible).
Cost of living:
This was the most disputed topic for some reason.
My cost of living is;
5 million dong per month rent
8 million dong per month food
4 million per month socialising
200k per month gym
3 million per month for the occasional weekend away.
(roughly 20 million per month)
All in all I can save around 15 million per month (around 600 dollars).
In short - the job is straight forwards, kids are enthusiastic, pay is good, life out here is pretty rosey.
Disclaimer: some people quit saigon within 6 months - its usually the pollution and the traffic that get to people.
Anway, this is just a brief review of how life is in vietnam for someone who actually lives and works here right now. I hope it helps. |

Thanks for sharing your good experiences. As someone who is in the process of uprooting his life and moving to Vietnam, it's good to hear someone saying positive things about it. Glad it's all working out for you.

From their website: ILA is Vietnam's leading English language training organisation.
If placing ESL greenhorns fresh out of training certificate courses into specialized IELTS classes is being the language-training leader in Vietnam, I'll eat my tighty-whities.
Another chain school success story at the expense of its own paying customers. |

Pretty good evidence of how few experienced teachers for hire there are now. |

I know that when I first got here, the lack of one-stop answers like this was a bit frustrating. Glad to hear it's been working out for you, tellersquill. |

I'm curious as to your travelling and prep time. Do they shuffle you around different schools? |

I'm a published writer in my 30's who has made a career change.
I find that they tend to give IELTS classes to the older or more experienced teachers. |

I teach in three different public schools.
Tues, Weds, and Thurs at the same school.
Prep time: a 70 minute public school class can be prepared for in about 30 minutes. I teach the same class three times in a day; so it equates to 30 minutes of lesson planning per day.
IELTS takes longer, but I only do two hours of IELTS a week. |
