To anyone who can offer information or advice on this query, I'd really appreciate it. I've tried to research these issues online, but so far have found wildly conflicting info.

I'm an American aged 57 with a B.A. in psychology. I earned the CELTA in Thailand eight years ago and proceeded to teach in China for a total of two years in three cities for branches of the same language school. I left China in 2013 and haven't taught since.

My options in Asia have diminished due to countries' age restrictions, and I'm not eager to return there anyway. Now I'm much more interested in Mexico and possibly elsewhere in Latin America. Aside from the cultural and gustatory appeal, I would really like to become proficient in Spanish.

Ideally I would prefer to teach in a language school, but for 6-9 months rather than a year if possible. Do such opportunities exist in Mexico, or do they generally insist on a one-year contract? Also, is ageism as much of a factor there in hiring as it is in Asia? Again, thanks in advance to any forum gurus or non-gurus who have info/experience that sheds light on the subject.

Not many language institutes here offer contracts at all, though the preference is always that you stay as long as possible. It will limit your options to say you only want to stay 6-9 months, but not by much.

Ageism is a factor here yes but 57 isn't old enough to hit it here I think. You see it being more of a factor in primary and secondary schools than in language institutes.

I think the greater issue to be concerned with is finding an employer willing to sponsor you for a work visa, on a shorter-than-a-year stay. You might need to get creative to find that, or to get a visa in some other manner.

If the language institutes don't offer contracts, then length of stay is less of an issue. It sounds like there is more leeway to work with all around than in China. I'm planning a visit to Mexico later this year to see how it feels and perhaps can make some first contacts then. Thanks for the information, Guy.
