Oman has issued a new directive
Unmarried expats and workers living in Oman’s residential areas have up to three days to register with the Muscat Municipality or will face eviction, national daily Times of Oman reported.
“Muscat’s municipality is in the process of implementing a judicial ruling against the home owners that house single residents in residential neighborhoods, without prior permission of the municipality,” the municipality said in a statement.
Earlier this year, the municipality raided properties in a residential area where single expats were living in violation of local laws.
Special housing complexes made for single expats were being planned in Bausher, Amerat and Mabella, according to the municipality.

I would suspect that this will not be targeted towards those in education, but the problem of renting flats to multiple males.

It would depend on where and who is accommodating expats. Most expats, as you have specified, will be in professional roles and thus would be exempt, as long as the accommodation rules are being adhered to by the relevant people in charge in housing. I am not aware of there being many compounds in Oman as they have in KSA. |

Never saw any "compounds" when I was in Oman, though they may exist far from where we teachers lived. I suppose that you could call the on-campus university housing at SQU a compound, but it would be a stretch. And these days only a minority of teachers live on campus... few TEFLers.

There are plenty of compounds in Oman especially in Muscat. You only have to look behind some of the high walls and there is a portacabin city.
The directive is aimed at the single labourers who live in areas with families.
It is to stop a group renting accomodation and then hanging around neighbourhoods where there are woman and children.
It's been discussed in several newspapers over the years. |

When I use the word "compounds" I am referring to the walled housing used for western expats in places like Saudi... used to be very posh - and many of them still are at places like Aramco.
I wouldn't use the term to refer to the collections of hovels where they jam in hundreds of TCNs. We always referred to them as "work camps."
And as I said above... the law is to stop landlords from renting to groups of males. This has long been a problem all around the Gulf.
