Is there a better way to find a uni job other than just contacting recruiters or watching the job board? I am only interested in working in Beijing.

Thanks.

Have you tried “China Uni Jobs”? You can look them up on Linked In. Not an agency per se, but more a helpful range of direct hire China uni positions for teachers with a full range of qualifications and levels of experience. I believe everything is between the uni and the teacher.

People hate on agents, and mostly rightly so, however they do have a purpose. As long as you're specific and firm (but polite) with your requests they can be of some use. They have contacts and ways to the right people that an average FT just doesn't have.

Some people advise going to the wikipedia page of a city, looking at the 'education' section and finding universities that way. However, finding a university and then contacting the right person is another issue. The university website is often outdated, wrong contact info, or no contact info. I did this a while ago, the vast majority of speculative emails went nowhere, no reply. Not saying it can't be done, just this isn't an efficient way.

So, my advice would either be to keep an eye out on the different job websites, I think the mods remove link to outside websites, but shouldn't be hard to find or contact agents.

I've gone through two agents before and didn't have any 'real' issues with them. They did lie about some conditions but nothing terrible. As the other poster mentioned, have a clear idea of what you want and stick to it.

Agents are good if you're outside of China. It's really that simple. It's also a good way to get a start in a city when you know nothing of the situation there. At the end of the day, it's always going to be your responsibility to check the contract. Just make sure that any contract states the university and not the recruiter.

Research the recruiter too. It's not that difficult with google.

I made this suggestion with the caveat that you ise it only when you've exhausted other methods.
This is about the right time to start applying for Fall semester starting on 1 Sept.

Thanks, all, for the feedback.

One question I have is what other websites are there for jobs? I use Dave's, of course, and thebeijinger.com, but I have a feeling I am overlooking some.

Baleap. org has a job advertised in Beijing with an Irish /Sino uni at the moment. This website normally advertises UK jobs, but occasionally has other things like this.

MOD EDIT is free to teachers. It is searchable if you have a particular locale in mind.
Again get cracking as July and August are holiday for uni staff as well as students.
In my exp recruiters like to have their requirements pretty much decided before the break.

Did you find anymore?
I am also looking. I have several areas which I would want to focus on.
Please let me know what you found.

It seems websites aren't allowed on this site, but try searching for "higher ed employment" and you'll find a website that has some uni postings in China (and all around the world, though probably an emphasis on the US). TESOL is an international organization that also has jobs posted on their website. Also, if you search something like jobs UK academia you'll find another website that has uni jobs - this site has the highest paid uni jobs, typically.

Many (or all?) of these positions are direct hire, and a fair amount of them pay more than average; they are often seeking more experience/advanced degrees, but not always.
