Hello Everyone,

I am a Canadian living in Kagawa-ken. In order to apply for a Z Work Visa to teach in China I need to get a Criminal Background Check from the local police station. Does anyone have any experience with this? What documents do I need?

Thanks,

BigZen

I think you need a letter from the school in China, otherwise the police won't help.
I had an interview in Hong Kong and was asked for the CNCC from the Japanese police. The Board of Ed. refused to give me a letter and the Yokohama police refused to help without the letter.

China should have the same requirements as Korea.
To get a job in Korea, Canadians need a criminal record check from the RCMP in Canada.

You'll have to go home and get that done if the employer wants a record check.

That said, I think some employers in China might not require it.
You have to contact the Chinese embassy in Japan and ask them this.

This is the term in Japanese: (海外渡航時の)警察証明書・犯罪経歴証明書

You'll want the exact Japanese to show the police, as there will be a chance nobody there will have done one before (and they may initially not know what you're asking). Basically, you need to go to the police "honbu" for the prefecture where you got your 住民登録. You'll need to show up with your passport, examples of mail sent to your address from a government agency (to prove you actually live there), and proof (in this case a letter, email, etc. from China) of why you need the form.

Assuming you have all that, it takes about fifteen minutes to fill out the form, and then another ten days to get the certificate. That said, it is free!

The Chinese government will for sure ask for an official criminal record clearance. Employers might not, but if it's a teaching job dealing with kids, criminal check would usually be a must.

At the embassy in Tokyo, you must ask in Chinese or in very good Japanese as they don't know English. Or just have a letter in Japanese explaining your request.
