Are there any age restrictions when applying for work in China?

I have also been seeking a definitive answer to this question. My interpretation is that 55 is a cutoff for most employers, but some will hire teachers between 55-60.

I know several near retirement teachers who would love to work in China and I thought I'd ask as they are keen to travel after they finish full-time work. Looks like it's a no go.

Yes, it’s not really the best place to go near retirement anyway, in my opinion. It’s hard work, difficult to travel (busy and complicated ) and pretty tiring! Those teachers would be better of going somewhere nicer in South east Asia where there are more relaxed visa rules (I hear) such as Cambodia or Vietnam.

Yes, it's 60. It doesn't only apply to foreign teachers but to local workers. Sometimes very skilled white collar workers are kept on past retirement age but it doesn't apply to teachers, it is more so for managers of global firms and high skilled occupations.

If you go in to the small cities it's quite easy to find a job that will hire you at 55-58. However once you hit 60 it's game over, it used to be that they would hire people despite this but the government have been pretty strict in enforcing it over the last 5 years.

I don't know of any 60+ working in my small city, even despite the fact they are desperate for teachers. I'd take a look at other countries.

Depends on the school the P.S.B and the F.E.B.

I am 62 and still teaching although I have been at this school for 11 years.

I will retire when I am 65 even if I am fit and well enough to carry on.

I'll get them to look at Cambodia or Vietnam and think of holidays in China - any other suggestions welcome.
