I have never taught in China. But the many jobs online look good. I'm going to be 59 next month. Should I bother to apply? I have an MA in TESL and 34 years of experience.

Just had a friend who was 67 and he went to China.

Also, heard in Shanghai, the age limit is 70.

Please provide guidance/advice.

Not very likely,

You've got even less chance in Shanghai, it's very easy for them to get someone younger and they are ageist. Your best bet is outside of the main cities but even in smaller cities you'll have a hard time because of recent policies. We couldn't hire someone more qualified than you (he had a doctorate) because of the policies. It probably depends on the province but the national cutoff is 60.

I would still apply but don't get your hopes up, if you do find a job likely it will be a one that nobody else wanted to take. That's realistically what you should expect. There is no harm in applying for jobs though.

I have been teaching at the same university in Jiangsu province for more than 8 years and just turned 70. At the time I came here, the provincial age limit was 65 but it dropped to 60 since then. Luckily, I have been getting waivers from year to year. However, I was just told this will be my last year. It seems like China is getting more rigid with the 60 year old age limit. However, at age 59, I think you can still make it under the wire. I would encourage you to apply as this may be your last chance.
