Hi there,
I am wondering if anyone can help. I've been offered a couple of jobs in China, one of which I've accepted. Throughout the whole process I've been in touch with a few agencies. Recently, I've been told by one of the recruiters that as a non-native speaker I am only eligible for a Z-visa in Zhejiang province, nowhere else. I've accepted a job in Fuzhou (Fujian province), I've asked the principal of the school if she's confident they would be able to get me a work visa. She said that 'the person who's putting the proposal together thinks so'. That still doesn't instil 100% confidence in me.... So my question is - does anyone know for sure what the current situation in Fujian province is? I should also mention that I am from the Czech Republic, my MA, Celta and QTS are from the UK and the majority of my teaching has been done in the UK too (around 10 years). The school I've been hired by is an 'international' all-Chinese school where I'd be teaching ESL.

Many thanks,

No one can really answer this question for you here. You just to have to go through the process and either get a visa or not. For sure, the recruiter who told you it can only happen in Zhejiang is not telling the truth (He's probably telling you this so he can get the commission for hiring you). There are non-native speakers in EVERY province with Z-visas. But it seems to depend more on the local authorities than provinces, the relationships employers have with those authorities, whether a certain govt employee thinks your quals are good enough...needless to say a variety of factors. I would say there is NO GUARANTEES for non-native speakers these days, and anyone who tells you there is...well, you need to see the visa in your passport.
