Hello!

I am a fourth grade English teacher in the U.S. I taught English in China several years ago. This year, I'm starting a Mandarin Chinese Language Club and I have a question for those who teach at Chinese schools.

At the middle school I worked at in Hunan, students started every class the same. I'd like to do the same for my club. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or if I'm forgetting anything?

Teacher: shang ke (class is starting)
Students, standing: ni hao laoshi, laoshi ni hao (hello teacher, teacher hello)

At end of class - Teacher: Xia ke! (class is over)

Are there any other "normal" Chinese classroom procedures or cultural nuances that would be nice to teach elementary students learning about China? And, any videos you recommend for beginning Chinese learners?

Hope this is okay to ask and thank you in advance for any help.

I taught at a Chinese high school and it was the duty of the class monitor to command her or his classmates to stand up when I entered the classroom.

So the question for me is, at what point does the teacher stop issuing the command "Shang ke!" and a class monitor do it. Somewhere between Grade 4 and Grade 8, I guess.

As for cultural nuances, the students were responsible for cleaning the classroom, once a week at the end of Wednesday's classes. Thus, Thursday morning we got to see a clean classroom, and Wednesday afternoons we saw a pig sty masquerading as a classroom.

And spitting. Teach the children to spit, on the wall, on the floor, and etc. Very Happy

I have the same issue with class cleaning. They clean on Wednesday at lunch, that evening they have club activities in the classroom. Thursday morning it is a mess again. Only Wednesday afternoon is it ever clean. I could ask them to clean twice, but they would then need their homeroom teacher to allow them to do it. Pretty annoying, but they are the ones sitting around their own filth.
