I am involved with hiring, so I got a briefing today on current and changing visa and work permit issues.
Z visa. So far age restrictions are <60 for B and <65 for A work permit. Most language teachers are B. A is for higher qualifications as indicated by job position and pay. Only exceptions at higher pay levels within the A work permit.
From December 2019 to December 2020, there is a trial period for a C type work permit for eligible Universities/companies located in the free trade zone, within SIP in Suzhou, Jiangsu. For the C type work permit, the age restriction is waived. For Master and Phd, the 2 years teaching experience requirement is also waived. With BS/BA you qualify with 10 years work experience, which is not restricted to teaching. My University Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University is eligible to apply for C residence permits.
I have no idea where else this applies and what will happen after December of 2020.
To reiterate, with any work permit, you are only authorized to work at the place that has gotten you the work permit and only for the work you are authorized for. Any other work at any other place, or private teaching, will get you arrested, put in jail and deported. Also, if you are hired as an English teacher, you can teach only English, and not for instance French. Locally the police have a monthly quota of foreigners to fill, so they are actively looking for illegal work.
