Casualised academic staff are being denied academic freedom and are treated as invisible, second-class citizens, prevented from choosing what they will research or teach, unable to plan a professional or home life, and vulnerable to exploitation by permanent staff, according to a new report published by the University and College Union (UCU) in the United Kingdom.

The report says the extensive use of casualised staff without a secure contract is a significant problem for UK higher education. The latest data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) shows that two-thirds of researchers (67%) are on fixed-term contracts and almost half of teaching-only staff (49%) are employed on fixed-term contracts. On top of that there are more than 6,500 academic staff with zero-hours contracts and a further 68,845 academic staff who hold ‘atypical’ contracts.
