About 60 per cent of Chinese students who have already applied to study in the UK next year are either likely to cancel their plans or have yet to decide, according to a new survey.

The survey of nearly 11,000 people also found that about 40 per cent of those already studying outside China were either unlikely to return or might still decide not to travel back for their courses.

From a very personal viewpoint, I can't see the prospect of having fewer Chinese students being a problem. Many UK universities have admitted so many that they have become almost 'colonised' by Asian students, thus changing the student's entire experience for the worst.
From a lecturer's aspect, fewer Chinese students will mean having to struggle to read a vastly reduced amount of incomprehensible essays, and fewer cases of being 'encouraged' (i.e., bullied) to pass students whose abilities are at least questionable.
In short, for both students and lecturers, this looks like very good news indeed.

“They pay.”

They also purloin intellectual property.

republocrat, you were asking about summer work. A friend had a presessional at a university which has now been cancelled. Be careful what you wish for.

I agree there are numerous downsides to having them, but just noting that there is a bottom line for institutions.
