I consider GB&NI as home.
When I am in GB&NI I answer the question "where are you from?" with
"from here".
When I am not in GB&NI, I answer: "from abroad" you know it is near Somewhere Else not far from another place, We don't have dollars.
I then fit in nicely with everyone else from 'abroad' It gets complicated when some of the people from different parts of abroad start telling everyone else from my part or other parts of abroad that their part of abroad is better that our part of abroad or that ...etc, and their comparison is based simply on their perception of abroad, which is only as good as their education about our part of abroad which we all know is inferior to our education 'cos our system is better.
Just a little more claptrap for the mill. |

I love that poutine thing. I tried it for the first time last year. Are there variations depending on different AREAS of Canada? |

When I was in the United States of America, namely California I hated the way that as soon as I opened my mouth people would say 'oh, you're from London'... I am a proud Northern English lass and I responded as such!
And a question about my country. Why do we have different countries participating in World Cup etc... e.g. England, Wales.... and then when it comes to Olympics etc we suddenly become Great Britain? I hate that too! |

They seem to have disabled HTML to stop us doing precisely that. You're not going to get your free beers. |

It's mostly in Quebec and Eastern (in Ottawa) and Northern Ontario because it's French Canadian (so probably the real stuff can also be found in New Brunswick, but I've never beent here, so I don't know) . By the time you hit Toronto, five hours away, poutine is mostly found in Burger King and a few Montreal Smoked Meat (AKA Montreal mystery meat) restaurants and at least one forward thinking steak sandwich place in a mall in the suburbs around Toronto (it's actually pretty hard to find cheese curds outside of Quebec, and if you just use regualr cheese it tastes really weird) .
I had "Italian Poutine" once in Ottawa. It's like Poutine, but with beef spaghetti sauce instead of gravy. Not good. Not good at all. Sort of like a weird Italian lasagne-type thing, but with French fries instead of pasta.

That's is an interesting question. Another is why so many people refuse to even admit that England, Wales and Scotland (and possibly Northern Ireland, but I'm not sure) are different countries.
I'm in Japan, and am constantly told "We think they are all one country". What "We think" means seems to be "it doesn't matter what you say, this is our opinion, and you either agree or you are wrong" because when I explained that they are thought of as different, a Japanese teacher pretty much yelled "You are wrong!" in my face in front of a class of 35 junior high schoolers. This, despite the fact that the reading the kids had was about either Wales or Scotland being their own countries with their own languages and cultures. He also will not allow me to show newspapers (found online) from Scotland etc that refer to another country in Britain or the UK as such. He won't even let me show the kids soccer standings from an English language Japanese newspaper that list England and Scotland as two different countries (along with Germany etc). |

Gam....BOOM, I think that is really crap. How do you put up with such a knob head? And where on this earth did he/she get that information? Do you like working there?
And I had Turkish cheese on my poutine, so I guess I havent tried a really authentic poutine, but my friend, the cook, was from Quebec. And admittedly, it was a packet thing, but it does taste like UK style Chinese take away chips n gravy. Hmmm I could just eat that, even though its only 8.45am and I should be thinking of muesli or something boring.
And finally, can anyone answer my Q about seperate country identity in Sport etc, when it suits us? Is it that it's just gonna make us look bad on the medals board? |

Basiltherat; You are correct, New York is not the capital of the world. It is the Center of the Universe. Please correct your notes. |
