I miss my family back at home. I miss my job which kept me busy and my brain ticking. The first six months of ESL teaching were great. But I have stopped thinking, I'm becoming dull every day. I'm so tired of faking smiles in class and correcting the same mistakes over and over again. My English wasn't the best but it is getting worst . I'm leaving in four months. .
I might do this again when I'm retired. |

I am in an age "between" two decisive periods in one's life: the age when you are at your best, and he next stage that's marked by decline.
My parents died one after another; they were divorced long before and didn't keep in touch with each other nor with their children. I learned about their respective deaths via the consular service. This summer, it was my father's turn.
But I have been in China too long. Just two years ago I was still full of optimism. This has given way to a more sombre mood. I don't expect to be in this profession for another ten years in the same country. I have lost too much faith in my ability to deliver inan unprofessional environment.
I don't have children, and wouldn't want to father a child in China of all places; yet I am considering me as a very caring stepfather of a girl whose mother is local, and totally uncommited to her own child.
But to provide for her I would have to have a more stable life.
While China officially now is in the WTO I doubt this country is going to embrace the world at large as well as it should. Am I beginning to sense Chinese fascist tendencies? I am certainly feeling the Chinese have found their age-old conceit and complacency again; the Olympic games have given them ample reason to feel superior again, and they certainly don't feel indebted or grateful to anyone outside. It's the other way around - they are showing signs of impatience about a world that doesn't kowtow to them and their narcisstic attitudes. Look at how they are bullying smaller nations - the latest spat opposes China and South Korea over a territory both claim as their ancestral land.
When China is going to host the Olympiad it will be much like Nazi Germany's trumpeting of their indigenous, purified-of-foreign-influence culture.
But I still don't know any other place I could pitch my tent again. |
