Hi Glenski,
I'm responding to this one since I don't think you'll get many bites from teachers actually working in an international school.

From what I know:
Qualifications: Typically a Master's degree in the subject you teach, international experience, experience in teaching your subject in your native country, and of course a teaching qualification in your native country.

Salary: I believe the salary in Japan is around 6 million yen a year.

Work conditions: Similar to working as a teacher in your native country. You are probably to be responsible for extra-curricular activities as well.

Types of classes/student: Small classes of typically very capable students.

I hope you can get more precise info from somebody actually working in an international school. For what it's worth you are sitting on a golden egg. Science teachers are always in demand. With your international teaching experience, experience in scientific research, and your Master's degree, after recieving your certification you would probably see that your resume will stay at the top of the pile.

Met the principle of either the HS or JHS actually. Can't rember. It's a gaijin managed place and definitley not your run of the mill private school in Japan.

Hi Glenski,

I am currently working at an International School and so far it has been a really good experience. The school is really small. I teach Kindergarten in the mornings and then TESL in the afternoons or evenings to junior-high and high-school grades. The working conditions there are really pleasant because there is more contact between Director and teacher. They have been really great in helping me fit in and they also appreciate my input by allowing me to incorporate my ideas on lessons. The qualifications that are needed for my school is at least 2 yrs teaching experience, a relevant degree for what you may be teaching, and at least 1 yr commitment. I think this is the case with most International Schools in Japan except the commitment might be 2 years instead of 1. I will PM my salary to you but for other International schools in Japan the salary is pretty good from what I hear because they give you a benefit package which covers costs of housing, insurance, all types of leave, cost of living differential, etc. My school does not provide this because it is small, it does however provide a house for the teacher. Hope I answered your question.
