I'm flying in to Shanghai on a tourist visa to take a job and am wondering what to expect when entering customs in Shanghai. I'm just asking for personal experiences. Particularily, when it comes to copies/originals of software amd music as well as personal writings. Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, for those people in Shanghai is 8000 RMB w/housing/meals/transpotations costs pretty standard? How much could one save a month if they're a non-partier? |

I have entered through Shanghai Airport only twice, but each time I just sailed through Customs without anyone wanting to look inside my suitases. I went through the "nothing to declare" gates as I did have nothing to declare. I am an older lady of course, and so I may look more harmless to them.
With regard to salary, I only receive 3,500 rmb per month and I live 3 hours Northwest of Shanghai. When I have visitied Shanghai on numerous occasions, I have noticed that everything is a bit more expensive than here, but not that much more.
I could save 2,000 rmb per month if I did not have the Orphans, so, if you do not party all the time, you should be able to save at least 50% of your wages. There are more temptations to spend money in Shanghai than there are in a smaller City of course.
Best of luck |

So am I and undoubtedly many others who take this common 'back door' route. However, try to cover your bases by anticipating answers to questions that are consistent with your documents.
In other words, don't let on that you plan to work. You're a tourist, nudge nudge wink wink, so fill out the customs card accordingly and tick the right boxes. When it asks for the address in China, fill in a hotel that you'll likely be staying at.
Questions are rare upon entry, the only time I ran into problems was trying to leave the country two weeks ago (when it turned out my Z-visa had expired and my resident book wasn't good enough). Coming into China though, they once asked me at the green lane, "Are you here in China to travel or work?" Without flinching I said travel, as that matched my documents.
It's also rare for customs to inspect baggage and suitcases, but I wouldn't rule it out - I've seen it happen on occasion. Perhaps they pull out a random person and do an inspection. If that happens, the biggest concern would be if you're carrying agricultural or meat products. After SARS and bird flu, they've been pretty strict on quarantine-related issues.
I wouldn't worry too much about software and writing.
