The general impression I've picked up from searching the web is that the ease or difficulty a farang faces in opening an bank account in Thailand depends from bank to bank and even branch to branch.

Can someone point me to a bank branch anywhere in Thailand where they let you open an account with a tourist visa and also give you an ATM card which can be used outside Thailand?

I am not sure, of course. But I don't think any Thai banks fit the bill. There are some foreign banks that may be more useful such as Citibank Thailand, HSBC, Standard Charter and ANZ and Bank of Asia. You can get info here:

hey,

does anyone know what the more common foreign banks are in BKK? What are the chances of running into a bank of america atm machine versus a citibank? Are the ATMs safe to use on the streets of bangkok or do you all usually walk into the bank buildings?

Also, would you suggest exchanging money at the airport or waiting until i got to the city?

thanks!

Daph,

You're spot on, go to enough banks or branches and one of them will let you open an ATM account (with card). It's a numbers game is all.

I'd have thought BoA cards would work in most other banks' ATM machines?

DO NOT CHANGE MONEY AT THE AIRPORT (or as little as possible anyway)! Crap rates!
