Hey Dominque,

I just got hired at Peppy's today! I believe you find out about placement two weeks before the training session beings..at least that's what I think I read!

By the way, you didn't happen to attend Peppy's interview session at U of T on August 21st? If so...we may have met!

When I was taking a TEFL course, the Peppy Kids recruiter came to the course and tried to recruit students. They pay less for people on the working holiday because they can. You can make up to 250,000 yen if you have a degree and they usually pop in with, "There is room for advancement."

The reason why they recruit Canadians is because they are eligible for the working holiday visa. They often hire overseas and you get stuck in buttf*cknowhere. The conditions are average...not the best and not the worst. However, it doesn't leave you much room for finding another job to supplement yourself if you are on the working holiday visa.

My friend worked there for the full year, mostly out of obligation once he got used to life in Japan and didn't have the gumption to look elsewhere because he was set up with a place and money coming in immediately.

He said that if he knew what he knew after the experience and came back to Japan, he would just try his luck finding a job when he got here or find one over the internet that paid 250,000 yen or more, even if you have a working holiday visa.

Yes I was there. I had my interview on the 22. I didn't think I would get hired since i have no experience with children at all. I was 100% honest about it, plus my teaching demo sucked.

Anyways, I'm meeting up with some 4-6 year old boys who are a hand full so I can see how I will react to children. If all goes well, I'll most likely accept the offer.

The only thing is, I really want to know where I am going to be placed before I arrive since I have family in Japan. Also, I HATE going to the doctor and I would need ot get a physical for this job.

I have no experience with children either, but had a really good interview. I also needed to get a blood test and medical exam to go. Good luck with everything and hope to see you there.

Blood test and medical exam???

Heh dont need that stuff for a regular work visa. If thats whats required on WHV then ouch(litterally).

Working for Peppy Kids club, your number 1 difficulty will simply be classroom management of kids. It's not a cake walk.

As far as room for advancement.... in Japanese Eikaiwa, the rule of thumb is to stay a grunt. If you go for advancement you're working conditions get worse as you are expected to do more... and for only a small amount more than what you were making as a grunt.

If you're on a whv you make less at Pep but you work less hours. Work visa folks make the industry standard but contractually obligate them to 40 hours. The 40 hours deal is also a requirement for those who have spouse visas.

They will not allow you to work the hours/pay that a whv person does either if you are under a spouse visa... sine they arent restricted or required for any hourage/pay(meanign they could be part time as well if they wished anywhere).

All that said, if you dont mind alot of commuting, needing lots of energy and dealing with kids, pep shouldnt be that much of a challenge to do for you. If you even hesitate to agree, I suggest you strongly consider something else.

Blood test? YIKES! My ultimate nightmare... this may take some time...

Oh I hung out with these boys that their parents don't give any restrictions to. All evening it was "don't do that" yet they kept going at it, doing these dangerous stunts. One day these kids are going to get hurt.

I find it difficult because you can't really overstep the parents boudaries. They told me no bribes ie. candy of some sort, because they will be off the wall and you can't scare them either because they won't explore and figure out for themselves.
One of them fell down the stairs a few times to learn not to slide down the banister, yet he still does it just differently. And the same one stuck his finger in an electrical socket a few times.

I think next time I hang out with them, I'll have to come up with more physical activities to run them down because playing house and drawing didn't tire them one bit.

One question, are you required to wipe these kids bums? How old are they before they can do it themselves?

ECC says you need to get the medical exam and TB test in order to work for them.

Again, for a Specialist in Humanities Visa? Its not a requirement of the visa.

I know plenty of people (including myself) that never had to do an exam or TB test to work for ECC. However, all workers are required to take a Japanese wham bam thankie of a physical every year.

I've never had to take a physical or blood test to be hired for anything here in Japan.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the WHV is a visa meant for people to take a HOLIDAY, not to try to find some full-time job. So, to think you can come here and supplement your JOB on the WHV is sort of self-defeating to the purpose of the visa itself.

Guys!
I was at that session too, and I was also hired.

Dominique, I believe I was in your classroom interview session on the second day. I was asked to join the school in January, and I'm just working out researching some details on the school and the working conditions before I accept the position, as I've had another offer from a company.

My only premonition is about location placed. From talking to Dave, it sounds like there is some flexibility to move around a little bit if you were entirely unsatisfied with your placement, assuming that there were spots opening up in other areas.

Has anyone heard anything else thus far? Any research that I should be especially privy to as a potential Peppy Kids teacher?

Hope to see some of you in training, should I accept the position!

Hey UT and Dominquie,

I start working at Peppy's in January. Let me know if you guys decide to come with PKC.

I'm also watching another thread about Peppy's at

http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+5793

This should help a bit with your research UT. I post as "Colaweizen."
No registration necessary to post. Hope this helps.

It's just a way of getting inexperienced teachers at a lower rate. They are not hiring based on the spirit of the working holiday visa, but rather having someone that is legally entitled to work at 20% lower than the 250,000 yen.

I decided to go with ECC since I would be able to teach a variety of ages instead of just working with children all day.
