Yes, they do. Where do you want to play? Japan is a big location.

Hey,

Just curious if Chess is popular lin Japan like it is here, with clubs and everything or if they prefer Go or nothing at all. Also, in the movies women are always getting together and staying up all night playing Mahjong.. Just curious..

Many schools have chess clubs and japanese chess clubs and go clubs. The only people I know of who play mah jong are men and they gamble. I think that it will be easy to get involved in these games here. Ask your students and they will direct you as to where you can play a few matches.

Mah Jong - I met a few students to be play against. It's the only way in due to the language problem.

Most people who play here are older people.
Often, they are groups of ladies who have spare time (typical students to be found at conversation schools).
No gambling is involved with these groups.

But, in case you don't already know, you'll have to brush up on the Japanese rules, as there are a few small but important differences from the rules as used from China/HK (and adopted by Europe & America)

Picked up a Mah Jong set today, incidentally, for 500 yen Very Happy at a garage/car boot sale
