thanks for all your responses guys. they've been very helpful. i'm not too bothered about the rent that i'll be paying because it turns out that i'm going to have a four bed apartment to myself because the other teachers in my block are either married couples or women. so i imagine it'll have a reasonable sized living area / kitchen etc.
the guest house in matsudo looks interesting though in case i decide to stay on in japan for a while...
