Unless you are a tech. teacher, you need a B.Ed. to become a certified teacher in Canada. How do you become a certified teacher in other English speaking countries? |

chi-chi,
In my case, I had had experience working and vacationing in Japan years earlier. My company relocated the whole office across the country, leaving 150 of us "biology people" on the street looking for pretty much the same type of work. Market was too flooded, and I'd had 6 reorganizations of my department alone in the previous 4 years. Job before that had gone through chapter 11 bankruptcy and was never the same. So, I felt I needed a breather and came here. Teaching was the easiest way to support myself. |

In the UK you do a PGCE (post-graduate certificate in Education). I think it's the same as a B.Ed from Ontario (which is where you're from, I think), but it just isn't called a "bachelor" degree. But then, it isn't all of Canada that does a one-year bachelor of education.
In Quebec, you do your undergraduate degree in education. So you can either do a degree in geography or in teaching geography. In ESL in Ontario, you either do a b.ed and then get a TESL added on by taking a couple of courses through the education faculty, or you do a TESL certificate at a university or college (and then try for an MA in Applied Linguistics). But in this case, you will be certified with TESL Ontario, and TESL Canada and not the Ontario College of Teachers (but with a B.ed you won't be able to be certified with TESL Ontario). In Quebec, you do a four year degree in teaching English. |

Bachelor of Business Administration - Major in Marketing & Management and minor in Information Systems.
Original plan had been to do a B.ED and teach music, alas, I was sucked into the corporate world.

I qualified as an attorney in South Africa (passed the bar exams and did my apprenticeship[articles]). Worked as a lawyer and later as a public prosecutor. Hated being a lawyer. Little job satisfaction.
Always enjoyed teaching though. Also am trying to become a professional fighter. In Japan I get the best of both worlds-get to do my favourite job (teaching) and get to train and compete with the best. Its a dream come true. |
