I am heading back home to teach in secondary school. I need evidence that I have not committed any crimes in China. If I can't get the record check, I might not be able to register as a teacher. Problem is, I have worked in three different provinces over a period of 9 years. Has anyone tried to get some kind of letter with a nice red stamp to prove they had no criminal record? Any ideas how to go about it?

Just go to one PSB (present one ) and try and get a letter. Old PSB's might have no record of you and refuse...Granted I am guessing here.

Wouldn't the onus be on them to prove you did something bad in PRC rather than vice-versa?

I had to do the same some years back, and the job awaiting me was a temporary summer job. Luckily, I was registered with my consulate in Hong Kong; they directed me to the relevant office of the Hong Kong Immigration Department. I got that statement pretty quick - I think one or two days, and it cost some HK$ 200. Then I had it verified by my consulate.

In the case of mainland authorities, you will have to get a translation of their statement, plus a notarization (go to a notary public of whom there are several in each city).
Then submit it to the consulate or embassy of your country for authentication.
The main snag might be the PSB; they might not be up to such a job, but you might get whatyou want by being persistent; it might help if you can supply a sample piece of writing, which they may elect to copy on their own stationery.
You will no doubt have to massage their egoes a bit, but from my experience I can say it does work, and it's likely to be free or very low (nominal charge).
Think of it as the same as a release letter - just from a different source.

Just have someone make you a paper. Make a PSB stamp in photo shop and get an official stamp or chop. Do you really think anyone in the states/canada/UK will contact the PSB of mainland China to see if you killed a beggar? [I have personally killed: three beggars, two dogs, one cat, a hooker and a loud mouthed foreign expat from Germany...other than that I am pretty good Wink

Wow, anyway, good luck with it. I hope they check my criminal record here in China. Then maybe the headmasters will stop giving me trouble and start living in fear when I ask them "to jump"...
