I have been offered a second, weekday job.

I was warned NOT to work a second job or risk being deported, fined, or both.

Just how big is this risk? The money is good, the hours are low, and it would boost my income to a super Japan/Korea-type wage still leaving me with lots of extra personal play time.

In Korea, the risk is pretty big. The government regularly checks the schools and sees if the foreigners have the VISA and the school has a permit.

How about here?

You didn't say anything about the nature of either of these jobs. private, university, contract terms etc. need context.

I do it all the time, short-term contract work mainly. Never had a hint of a problem.

I have offer a qualified "go for it". Make it clear to the second employer that in the case of a conflict, your first school gets first call on your time. Do your best (considering that this is China...) to be sure there are no scheduling conflicts. Keep lines of communicatio open and stay current so that there are no surprises. Then go for it.

It is working in an oil company's Research and Exploration division teaching adult employees conversational English.

15 students, 3 hours a day, two days a week, 200 RMB an hour.

I am more fearful of getting caught and deported more than anything else.

I am a tad confused here, GWoW. Are you suggesting that 200 RMB an hour constitutes "a super Japan/Korea-type wage"?

They (the police) won't even know you are there. It will be cash in the hand. No contract (I assume). No tax. Good money. GO FOR IT!

Part-time work is very popular in China for teachers. I don't know anybody who is not tutoring etc.

P.S. Where do I get some of the action!

I second that as well.

Seriously, the police have more important things to check out than some foreigner working a second job.

Think of how many illegal DVD places there are... police need to crack down those before they start chasing the foreign teachers.

There is the fake stuff market in Shanghai (xiangyang market or something like that...) and across the street is like to police HQ for cracking down on illegal copies... Question I have is why is there still a fake stuff market across the street if they are to crack down on this.

In China, there is a backdoor for everything. How is your current school going to find out about this employment anyway.

Most likely from the new employers.

Why would the new employers contact your school? Sorry, it just does not seem that the Chinese go out of their way to share information.

in Korea people will phone Immigration and report you...I have never heard of such a thing here.

I was told if you have a green book it's a very small risk.

An extra 4800 a month for not doing a whole lot is pretty good.

Actually, what I meant was that the two powers that be most likely already know each other.

I have been wondering about this topic also/ The second employer, part time , four hours a week, asks for passport and visa information and they deduct tax. What happens when you want to convert money at the bank and the bank brings up the records?? which states there are two employers?? No tax apparently is paid from contract job, but if I want to exchange money, the bank wants contract and other details that have been covered at Daves here. I think the school needs to get a statement from the government that you take to the bank saying there is no tax owing, but then there is this other part time job that says I have paid so much tax?? I hope this is clear what I am saying. Is there such a thing as a database or record in the computer filed by passport numbers with the government??

I get the impression that he will not exactly be asked for a passport or be paying tax, 'Oprah'.
