|
|
My wife and I are thinking of moving to Japan for a few years. I have experience teaching english and don't forsee any problem finding work for myself. My question is what kind of visa will my Thai wife be able to get and what kind of work would that allow. She is very experienced at classical Thai dance. We were thinking that she might be able to find work as an entertainer at a classy Thai restaurant. Otherwise I was thinking that she could teach Thai dancing, either as private lessons or at a dance school. Any advice for us?
We are only interested in respectable work--no hostess bars or "exotic" dancing. |

The easiest visa she'd be able to get would be a 'dependent visa'--assuming, of course, you first get the work visa. Paul or Glenski will correct me, I'm sure, but I believe you cannot work full-time on a dependent visa. At least, that's what it says on the following government sites:
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/04.html
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/03.html#b
As for working as an entertainer at "a classy Thai restaurant"--you would need to live in a big city to find one (e.g., I lived in Fukui for over 6 years...that would not be your city of choice....) I imagine there'd be a market for teaching Thai dancing, either as private lessons or at a dance school, depending of course on her level of Japanese. Without Japanese language ability, she'll have a difficult time finding, let alone keeping, students and/or a job. |

On a dependent visa (which my wife is on) your wife will be able to make 1.2 million (or 1.1 million) yen/year. No taxes.
I agree with the last poster, big cities only if your wife wants to work somewhere "classy". |

You can only work up to 20 hours a week, and that is after you get permssion from immigration. It is still a non-working visa and they could still say no. Immigration decides whether one can work on a case by case basis.
Income over 1 million year for a dependent, or about 80,000 yen a month attracts secondary tax on the main earner's income. |

Does anyone have any links about the dependent's visa? I've never seen anything in writing, just gone by what others have said in the past. |

Thanks for the info. I'm most interested in the Kansai area. Kyoto would be ideal, but would it be more realistic to look in Osaka? |

I am in Kyoto (southernmost rural part) and JR Kyoto and JR Osaka are only 30 minutes apart by train (excluding connections to subway). Many Kyoto-ites commute to work in Osaka. More jobs are in Osaka because of the larger population. Kyoto is a nice place to live, great pubs and live music but not so many schools in this neck of the woods and I rarely see them advertised.
