I would like to raise a glass to Brian Clough who died earlier today.
He was the stuff of Boys comic book dreams..the most prolific goalscorer per game in history.
As a manager he transformed journeyman players and moderate 2nd division players into European Champions....TWICE...!

He was a Champion, a Giant, a Colussus and a Winner.

Brian Clough...I salute you.

Yeah, ridiculously sad news. I think the thing that everyone is talking about is what a massive character he was; genuinely funny and not absolutely not in the cosy, matey way that MOTD and other panels are today. Clough was a spikey character and a law unto himself. It probably wouldn't have worked but it would have at least been highly amusing to have had him in charge of England.

Some of his best quotes:

"If I had an argument with a player we would sit down for twenty minutes, talk about it and then decide I was right"

"I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one."

I only thank God that we now have Jose Mourinho to entertain us after Clough's passing.

R.I.P.

not just a great player and manager but a great guy.
was shafted by england both in his playing career (only 2 caps!) and for the england mang job
look to see where forest and derby are now!
R.I.P Brian Clough, my all time favourite manager

I think it was "even educated bees do it", mate. It is a really funny clip and I am a really small, petty, petty man.

My favourite clough story:

He punched Roy Keane and Keane immediately got up. Afterwards he said he obviously hadn't hit him hard enough

Signing the first ever 1 million pound player in Trevor Francis.....a hugely gifted player and then putting him in the Reserves and getting him to make the tea at half time.....pure class!
I read Viv Andersons autobiography a few years ago.....lots of good stories and anecdotes...my favourite is Cloughie during a 1980 Training session with his then team of recently crowned European Champions.

He pointed to a field full of stinging nettles..ordered all players to strip to their shorts and told all of them to run through it.
They did!!!!

He may have ruled through fear but the results and dedication/loyalty of his teams was evident.

As it goes, I just realised it should be "educated fleas".

Smacking his own fans in the face during a pitch invasion.

The crowd singing "We're so sorry, Brian Clough" the next week.

One of the funniest and most unpredictable moments in football (which belongs alongside Cantona's ingenius drop-kick) was when Nottingham Forest had a pitch invasion at a home game. Cloughie was already in the changing rooms when he was informed about what was going on outside. In response he stormed back through the tunnel and caught the first 2 pitch invaders he could lay his hands on and lamped them both clean in the face! It was like watching something straight out of the WWF.

I seem to remember that both fans did not wish to press charges for assault if Cloughie made a public apology to them both. In a style only Cloughie could exude, he apologised to the fans personally on TV, planting kisses on their bruised faces! The guy was simply hilarious...

There was also a story when he asked a player(can't remember who) if he had ever been punched in the stomach. The player said no and so Cloughie punched him in the stomach. 'you have now' was the response. The guy had also just won man of the match.
