|
|
The CELTYL (Certification in English Language Teaching of Young Learners) is a two-week top up course for those with experience wanting some formal YL training. Its an extension to the CELTA. Its becoming recognised by some good schools. Quite a few places in Europe such as International House and the British Council offer the CELTYL. A couple of years ago, a school in the UK offered me a place on a CELTYL for free in exchange for some teaching I think. Anyway, I lost their details!
Ive looked at http://www.cambridgeesol.org, which lists all the centres offering CELTA, DELTA, CELTYL, etc and the dates. There doesnt seem to be many courses available.
1. Has anyone done this course? What did you think? If you think its garbage, suggest another course.
2. I could surf the web for the next week, but in true teacher fashion. Anyone know of any two-week courses available anywhere next March/April or June/July/August?

I did it at the BC on HK Island. It is a pretty straightforward enough course.
I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to prepare for teaching nippers. |

As far as I know, there is a Celtyl extension to the CELTA and there is also a month long CELTYL in its own right. |

I believe 'Once Again' to be mistaken (once again). Since I have done both I can say that - at the BC in HK at least - there is only an extension, it does not exist in its 'own right', and one can only commence this YL extension after having completed the 'full' (read, 'adult-oriented') CELTA. |

Once again is correct. There is a month long CELTYL. In Istanbul there is one at the BC and ITI(local RSA company) |

I find it amazing that people can post with such certainty Ludwig, without doing the most simple of checks first. I think it says a lot about someone's ego. Below is taken from the CELTYL website:
"What does CELTYL involve?
You can take CELTYL full time (typically 4 to 5 weeks), or part time (from a few months to over a year). Courses focus on teaching learners in various age groups - 5 to 10, 8 to 13, or 11 to 16 years of age. "
Why do you set yourself up for such stuff Luddy? Do you have no self-control? |

Yep, there you have it at the site linked by 'once again':
**CELTYL
**YL extension to CELTA
They are clearly two different things.
Luddy sets himself up for these falls so frequently because, for him, the 'truth' is determined solely by his own experience of it. If he took a YL extension course, then it must be the only YL course in existence--anywhere. So he doesn't need to check the facts.
And 'once again': Luddy never responds if he's been caught in an error. He'll ignore you.
... Except probably this time, as I've called attention to it! |

Will you two go and play somewhere else?
What happens when a student rubs you up the wrong way? Do you spend weeks plotting revenge? Grow up you sad sad individuals. |

Hod,
As the OP, please feel free to ignore any subsequent responses to your post.
But please don't ignore the advice and direct responses you received from 'once and again' and even from Ludwig. A simple 'thanks for the information' from the OP to those two guys would have been nice ...
Until then, I fear that we'll keep playing!

Yes, thanks to those who replied in useful styley. I'll let you know how I get on.
Asia Traveller, you're in Penang? Lucky you. I've been about 100 times and hopefully will be working there next year. |

Oldies are best.
I'm gonna do this course in 2005, honest.
ECC in Thailand don't do it; I checked. Who on earth is running a 2-week intensive course in the first half of this year? Please advise, I'll travel anywhere!

Just finished the YL Extension to the CELTA last month. It was useful and not too challenging if you've done a CELTA with two written assignments and two project like things to hand in alongside 4 hours of observed TP and a batch of peer observations.
FWIW, if do it through the British Council and do not have the CELTA (as I didn't) they may well provide you with a certificate stating that you have at least done the extension. THey cannot endorse non-CELTA certificates such as the Trinity.
Ludwig is indeed mistaken. I work for the British Council and have been at the Hong Kong centre. THere are two different things although the Council only runs the Extension which might be where the confusion arises. Our tutors were very clear to point out to us that we were doing the Extension ONLY and not the CELTYL as it exists in its full form.
The full course is harder to come by. It involves basic TESOL guidelines similar to those you'd find on the CELTA, is longer and is of course adapted to the needs of children. |
