I literally have a bucket of these. Does anyone know of anywhere to exchange them for real currency without any tedious rolling? In Canada some supermarkets have machines which allow you to exchange miscellaneous coins for bills...is there anything similar here? My small local bank has nothing of this sort...but I do live in the sticks. Any help is appreciated

You could try the post office. They changed my change, just requested that I separate the different kinds, and come back after a bit, because they were busy.

Alternatively, haul it to the nearest Bank 114. They usually have machines and you can request cash, though it takes a while. If you have an account you can leave it and have them deposit it.

I think you've stolen half my name...

Anyway, my policy is to put a few of them into my wallet/pocket each time I go shopping and then pay with exact change every time!

The clerks love me for this, but they probably think I'm a little strange.

Getting rid of 1 yen coins is a skill...well not really.....just spend em....they are there economically rationaled by consumption tax...nothing ever comes to a nice round figure here...its always 364 yen or summat....dont chuck em in a bucket...take a handfull and use em bit by bit even if it does make you look like a big gaijin mooley counting one bits...the pile will dissappear...avoiding breaking (?) the bigger coins and notes....though.... DO..chuck a few 1 yen bits in a glass of water...THEY FLOAT...amaze friends and family and admire floaty shiny currency in water....

We just take all of our coins to the bank and they have an auto sorting machine there. No rolling, no counting. Ask your bank.

If you don't want to accumulate them in the first place, just put them in the charity boxes at the cash register when you get them.
