Hi all. Can anyone tell me anything about the city of Tieling (near Shenyang in the northeast)? I have a job offer there and any comments (positive or negative) which you have about the place would be most appreciated.
Regards,

I don't know too much about Tieling but it is very famous in China as the birthplace of Zhao Benshan. He has been China's best known comedian since the late 80s (if you don't know the name he's the guy who is on CCTV nearly every night doing crosstalk reviews). He also gave a delightful performance as Zhao in Zhang Yimou's 'Happy Times'. |

Tieling is a normal working class Northeastern city. I lived there for about a month. The people are warm and friendly, however most have not dealt with foreigners before so for some that can take some getting used to.
You will have a more genuine "Chinese" experience there than if you were in Beijing or Shanghai. I think that Chinese small towns although a bit boring at times, have a lot to offer.
Yes it will be a cold winter, yes there will be a little pollution, but the biggest thing you have to worry about is meeting complaining foreigners that say they understand everything, but really know nothing.
Go with an open-mind and try to enjoy yourself. If you do this you should have a good time. |

Thank you all for the interesting and helpful replies. One thing that is on my mind: I'm from Texas and have lived only through two "real" winters ("real" being a very relative term of course): the winter of 95-96 in Washington, DC (huge blizzard) and the winter of 92-93 in Northern Honshu, Japan (very snowy but not bitterly cold). So, I have little experience with super-frigid temperatures. Can you give me any advice on how to cope? Should I purchase cold weather gear here in Texas before I go or would it be smarter to wait until I'm in Tieling?
Thanks!
: )

Im in Shenyang so its close to what your gonna get and since Im Australian I'm not really used to winters either, I think thats when it rains more than once a moon. On a more serious note you should be able to buy clothes really cheap, especially on the American dollar value. Of course if you want something that is not a rip off of another brand buy it in the US, even if it was made here in the first place.
I reckon warm socks are a good idea to bring from home, all the ones Ive seen here are dodgy but anything else just bring some cash over and get here. Even if your city has little, which I doubt. You can always come to sunny Shenyang and go shopping here. |
