I suppose you guys are not averse to accepting shady deals. Go ahead, buy your business visa (at your own expense...!). Why can't you find a school that doesn't put you on a tight spot?

So many chaps out there keep hollering what a goldmine China is... jobs by the thousands...
OLf course - if you allow yourself to be the running dog of some Chinaman turned slave driver!

A business visa is not normally given to teachers; try it in the U.S.A.! Or in other first-world countries! You will have to supply credentials to substantiate your claim to bei a bona fide business person!
In HK, you won't. They are doing a roaring business in selling visas.

But you might trip up acrosws the border!

The cops are known to show up on school premises and check on your ID!

The cops waylaid me 8 years ago when my boss was making me work illegally in a province I was not supposed to be working in, nor did he register me as a resident. Thus I infringed two provisions, and consequently I was put under house arrest until my boss showed up, confirmed my version I had given to the cops, and paid a fine. I was released - from house arrest and from my boss' payroll!

Another pitfall is that if you stay for 183 days or longer on Mainland territory, you become legally liable to pay tax. You will in theory have to prove how you have been making a living, and teaching will be deemed illegal! Good night to you guys!
Luckily, the authorities haven't, to my knowledge, monitored F visa holders' economic activities so far, but who knows when they are going to?

Thank you everybody for the insight into this issue. I have been teaching on the mainland here for the last year and got reamed by my last boss.

This F visa thing is only an issue for the next two months. The job in question is only part time and I am using that to move to a new place (Xiamen). My hope is that I will start djing there soon after.

Either way, I have another job offer for Dec. 1st that does provide the legit visa.

Thank you all for your insight.

Sincerely,
Safari

Roger,
I guess I am one of those "chaps" that you attempted to malign.
Just because I questioned your version..."swarms of FTs", "no jobs", "PSB" ready to pounce, doesn't mean I've said China is a "goldmine" or "thousands of jobs" are available.
I simply questioned your rather bitter analysis.
The reality is, there are good jobs and fair bosses.

Perhaps if I was chained to my kitchen and forced to work a "legal" low paying job, I too might be a sourpuss.
No one has to be a "running dog" unless of course you find yourself in your particular position.
Sorry for your luck!

PS
"Luckily, the authorities haven't, to my knowledge, monitored F visa holders' economic activities so far, but who knows when they are going to?"
Or if they ever do?

Also, you only have one entry with a 'F' visa! How can you leave and come back in those six months?

Anyone can pick up a legit 6 month multi-entry F visa through, agents, in either Chungking or Mirrador mansion on Nathan road, Hong Kong. The visa will say issued in Guangdong. This costs around 500 HK dollars or 600 for the same day.

a 6-month F (tourist?) visa for 500HK? is there any catch to this?

F = "business" (fangwen) visa.

L = tourist visa.

A 12mth multi-entry F for around 1100 is also possible. Same day service. The catch comes later if you get nabbed working on it.

Are these multi-entry F visas available to U.S. passport holders, too? I ask because last April (I think it was) Beijing tightened up on U.S. passport holders in retaliation for new U.S. visa restrictions. Thanks.

ahh.. i see, now it make sense. so i can get an F visa, hang out as long as i like, and get it converted to a z-visa when i find work? just don't get caught working on an f-visa in the meantime..

edit.. wait.. an F Visa isnt' a tourist visa and requires a chinese company to sign on you, right? i'd rather have a 6 month L visa.

I think youve got bigger, heavies, than me on your tail. That goes for both of you. You are curiosly vunerable Ludwig and csmosley you are very obviously trying to be a pain. How about leaving the ego, if not the cynic, behing Luds. As for you Mosley come clean.

Yes, quite! ('Heavies' such as the editors of TEFL journals and of local newspapers, for example. Never mind, maybe one day you too will be able to write a coherent sentence.)

i'm trying to be a pain?? really, i'm not. i'm sorry if i'm asking questions which seem to have obvious answers, i'm very naive in this regard and relative newcomer to information of this sort. i don't mean to hold an ego and i'm not trying to be a pain - there isn't any sarcasm in my questions to you or anyone else.

i don't know what you mean by heavies on me. i don't know if this is standard terminology in whichever country you're native to, but i'm an american and have a difficult time understanding what you're talking about. once again, i apologize.
