Thanks -- just trolling for opinions. My impressions of UPM and IPA are the same as yours, although I haven't worked at either. I was interviewed by both at TA, and their reps seemed like decent enough people.

I was at UGRU many years ago, and my feeling was that UAEU was the most typical of ME universities, where MOST things get done sooner or later, insha'allah. As I've indicated elsewhere (in an MLI thread, I believe) I did witness some real pain rendered unto some innocents abroad courtesy of a bureaucratic foulup between the UAE embassy in DC and the UAEU . While I do think the UGRU is one of the better posts in the Gulf, I'd consider "reasonable" somewhat of an overstatement. "Tolerable in an insha'allah sort of way" seems to me like a more apt descriptor.

But that (your UGRU experience) was how many years ago?
Let's keep it current and general rather than specific.
Anyway - how come you are staying at ADU - or have i got you mixed up with another poster - sorry if you are not at ADU - and actually, from reading the forum, sorry if you are!

Many.

I understand why you would say that, Mr. Lifer, but I think that there may be a tendency among us to think that problems are temporary and that they eventually get fixed, or that things work fine until they get broken; it is my contention that such is not the case in the ME. Rather, I think that situations that WE consider problematic are not always thought of as problems by our employers, since these situations do not always impose hardship on them. I think we need to remember that.

I think the assessment that things are good or bad at a given time applies only for that time, and cannot be projected into even the near future -- unless, of course, there is an institution with unusually good or bad management which values, and has achieved, stability. There are such places; KFUPM stands out in my mind as one of them.

However, we've all heard tales of how a situation changed practically overnight at this or that institution, courtesy of a decision that was made with no regard for the interests of either teachers or students. This is how things generally work in the ME, in my experience, and this is what we hear from the UAEU from time to time. For this reason, I do not think that currency of information is MORE valuable (I will concede that it is EQUALLY valuable) than information that comes from long-term evaluation.

Just a question of perspective, I suppose.

Not me. Never even seen the place, alhamdulillah. Insha'allah I never will.

As the ADU debate apears to have resurfaced, the purpose of this post is to place the thread near the top of the UAE category. It contains some pertinant information.

There have been a lot of very negative postings about Abu Dhabi University in the past (including one of my own), and I must say that a good deal of what has been said was quite true. However, I must also say that since this new academic year began (2004-5), there have been a lot of very positive changes and the whole atmosphere (at least in the Language Institute) is MUCH better. To begin, many of the very negative players are out of the picture. This includes both faculty and administration. Secondly, the Director (Dr. Davis) has implemented a new curriculum that, although the kinks aren't all worked out yet, is far better than the old one. There's a very effective computer-adaptive placement testing process in place and students will have to pass a standardized/objective/professionally-produced test to progress to the next level each term. We have new textbooks, which work a lot better than the old ones. There are clubs and activities for the students. And, on the Abu Dhabi campus there is a new building just for the Language Institute. I would say that most of the negativity is gone. It's a new program, so there are, of course, still some hurdles to jump over, but with a whole new positive environment, most everyone has incentive to work together to make the program work. I would say that if you don't mind a little bit of inevitable disorganization (ADU is, after all, only one year old), it is now "safe" to apply to ADU!

Could we please post any comments on the "Call for Submissions" thread so that we have all the updates on one thread?

I was amazed and shocked to read the person's comment that it is now safe to teach at ADU! It is obviously someone in administration who has written this and sounds very much like the HR manager who is a TOTAL con artist, liar, and will do what it takes to destroy teachers lives for that school to keep his job! He had a track record of deception, lies, broken promises, firing single working moms with children, and would do anything to destroy someone if it got in the way of his objectives. IT IS NOT SAFE TO GET BACK INTO THAT CESSPOOL OF LIES AND DECEIPT! Continue to be WARNED, and you are a FOOL if you apply to teach at ADU!

I was not amazed or shocked to view the post that ADU is fine now that all of the bad teachers have left. (That includes the Deans as well). I am surprised that it took so long for big M (An Iraqi - now VC) to get a loyal lacky to post lies about the establishment.

Simply put - the administration of the college is now in the hands of a person who is evil by nature. Join if you want - but you WILL be screwed - royally!

Of course, it does not take a brain surgeon to understand that as long as the same admin is in power, nothing will change. Teachers do not have their own offices in the "new building," text books are not available yet, students have high expectations "since they pay for their education"...etc
The director of the ELI does not have the power to do anyhting that we can consider drastic becuase that requires sharing power and that is considered "unacceptable" by the admin. Most, if not all, insturctors are still suffering. The same stories of last year are being repeated.

So.....ADU has gone all hunky dory now?????????????????

That will be the day......

Apologies for those who do not know/are not aware of the massive deceipt that ADU is - swimming with crocodiles would be more pleasant and less lethal - both at a professional level as well as on a personal level.

NO. There are NO excuses nor apologies sane enough for the outrageous pit of lies and garbage that ADU is. The way they treat teachers and other staff is notorious. That previous posting of how much the warehouse has changed is nothing but another lie by a paid - and desperate - insider - and those who know, know well who that person is. And if you are reading this (as we all know that you will), you will realize that WE DO know who you are and WE DO know how you are lying - only once again.

All that I can say, is that I truly hope real professionals will stay far far from the dispicable place called ADU.
