Most dangerous place to teach?
Well, the US cant be that safe..where else will one find so many students with guns (a problem inmy city, Boston)

Then there is Loompaland..its said a hoard of Schnoz Wangers and nasty Vermishish Knids wiped out most of the OompaLoompas, but an insane candy manufacturer abducted the surviving population, and pressed them into indentured servitude at a candy factory...

I would think Columbia is very dangerous, but a chum who taught there said they met with no problems....

I hear a report that the next big rush of TESOL "teachers' will be to Uranus...so guess that one is out.Atlantis?Too well known.Well, there is always the Lost Continent of Mu.PLEASE don't email me and ask me how you can find out about teaching in Mu...after all it is LOST,right? Then there is also Lemuria....
Now here is another possibility. If we could somehow get into other dimensions...teach TESOL to "beings" or whatever in the fourth dimension...raises some interesting possibilities and problems. This would open up a whole new dimension(s) for TESOL teachers. Smile And just think of the new "cert"programs! Smile

Then of course,if time travel ever becomes practical....why, we could ship a lot of the so-called "teachers"cluttering the field to....oh,maybe the Jurassic or something...or maybe something a bit less distant......like the Dark Ages...they could just as well pretend they are "teachers" back then...and we would be rid of them. Smile All we have to do is iron out the technical problems(well, yeah, there are a lot).Anyway, something to think about... Smile

As a city girl, I've always appreciated the glamour and excitement of places like Gotham City and Metropolis, but the crime rate in those cities is just too darn high. Besides, you never know when some leotard-wearing palooka is gonna come crashing through the wall in the middle of a lesson.

Dear Ria,
" Would Utopia be considered a dangerous place to teach? "

Nowhere would, I'd say, be less dangerous than most other places. ( " Utopia " is Greek for " nowhere ", I believe. )

John

Johnslat,

Although I don't have a dictionary on hand (and please, I am one of those people who need actual pages, I can't just point and click), I thought Utopia was sort of an 'ideal society'. This idea of mine comes from my home region (British Columbia), where many Utopian communities were formed with, I believe, the idea that it would be a 'perfect' place. Hence my question. Anyone have a dictionary definition of Utopia?

Dear Ria,
" Utopia " is a word coined by Sir Thomas More as the title of his book which dealt with the creation of a " perfect society ". It comes from the Greek:
" Etymology: Utopia, imaginary and ideal country in Utopia (1516) by Sir Thomas More, from Greek ou not, no + topos place
Date: 1610
1 : an imaginary and indefinitely remote place
2 often capitalized : a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions
3 : an impractical scheme for social improvement "

John

Dear John (johnslat),

Sounds like we're both right! Very Happy

But, I'm still pretty sure it would be a dangerous place to teach.

Dear Ria,
Perhaps it would be " perfectly dangerous ". At the very least it would be as dangerous as " Erehwon ", the place described by Samuel Butler in his
book of that title ( hint: read it backwards ).

John

John:
I must check out that book, as it seems to 'perfectly' describe where I am right now! Not that I'm complaining...
Can you guess the reference in my subject line?
And with that I must sign off, as I am sure we have completely p.o.'d the original poster and probably several others by now, with all this talk of Utopia. Sigh, wish I was there...(...or am I?)

Dear Ria,
Eureka - I have found it - or rather, them. Utopia is in New York ( twice ), Florida ( where you are ), Kansas, Illinois, Ohio and Texas ( again twice ).
The one is Florida, nearest to you, is in Sarasota county. So head for Utopia:

John...you are too much!

Sarasota is impossible at the moment. But I will be in New York state in a week or two, with Utopia only a 3 hour train ride away! Still, it might be dangerous...
Now, I really must sign off. By the way, Johnslat, with all your wisdom, any advice regarding my 'serious' post? (shameless plug for replies to '3 yr vs 4 yr degree' in Gen'l Discussion forum)

It's been fun!
Until tomorrow, Ria

Kent:
You put the USA on your list of dangerous places, but not Russia!
Come on now Laughing

Just check out Moscow and St. Petersburg in the G and M article you referred to in one of your post.

Unless you are a drug dealer Laughing , IMHO, the US is much safer than Russia. Moscow trailed far behind even Detroit in terms of safety in the Mercer survey.

Hello gmat et al:

Hey folks: This is not my list; I just took this stuff off the Net. (See the links at the bottom of the original posts.)

I too was surprised about some of the countries that were and were not included.

Regards,
kEnt
