| How fierce is the competition to teach English at International Schools in China? I have a Masters in Public Health, no teaching background, no TEFL certificate... What would I need to do to land this type of job? I am willing to enroll in a TEFL certificate program, but I won't have had much actual teaching time/experience under my belt before I'd want to apply for positions. We (my family and I) would ideally relocate to China within the next 2-3 years. |

| Yes, most International schools require a BEd, or equivalent. If you could do that before you came you would most likely be able to find a good position, if not then you're probably looking at a general ESL teaching position. International schools pay international wages so they demand the relevant credentials, you would be teaching a number of classes in English, not just English language so you would need to be prepared. . |

At intewrnational schools you might find yourself teaching subjects OTHER THAN ENGLISH! If you don't have a specialty I don't see a good chance for you to get hired by any of them!
If you do want to teach English at one of them you will need to be able to teach grammar, among other subjects; in some cases you might have to be able to teach it in the local tongue!
Then, there are bilingual schools where kids get most of the subjects in the local language but some electives with English as a medium of instruction. Again, you have to have a solid education and teaching background. |

Presently the competion is dependent on where you want to teach, salary, and who is hiring. As the olmpics get closer in 2008 a lot of businesses and schools will be trying to catch anyone they can get.
1. Have you made presentations or spoke in front of a group of people?
2. No teaching background is OK. It is helpful depending on where you want to go and kind of accomodations you want.
3. Do you know any Chinese people?
4. Do you have to be around English speaking people?
5. How is your health? Do you have a passport. Do you have a picture of yourself? Do you have copies of an original transcript and degree? I suggest you scan these items and put them on a CD or floppy disk.
6. A TEFL is good if you don't have any kind of background in training, presentations, and speaking in front of a group of people..
7. Do a test and post a resume on several Chinese ESL websites. Always ask for a copy of the contract regardless if you plan to go or not.
8. A lot of schools and universites want to control the accomodations and salary because they contend the government is pulling the strings; BA/BS 2,500-3,500RMB; MA/MBA/MS 3,500-4,500RMB; PHD 4,500+RMB.
9. Can you negoiate with people?
10. Don't expect to get rich.
These are few things to think about. I was in China for 14 months and married a Chinese woman.

Re. that last post. Of course if you are qualified to teach at an international school you will get a substantially higher salary, around 2-3000 USD a month, enough to live pretty damned well on in China!
(I live OK on 5 odd thousand, but could do with more!
This is why if I don't find a good job next year without one, I'm going to apply to do a PGCE back in the UK. |

If you are from the UK, why not do a PGCE? This is paid for by the UK govt (although admittedly you only get about 6k to live on for the year) and once you've got it you can get an International School job easily. |
