Through my travels, I have so far learned that in England, America, Japan, Hungary, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and in New Zealand, people will drive on the highway and pass a cop who is hiding on the side of the road with his or her radar gun waiting for a speeder. Sometimes people will flash their bright lights to oncomming traffic to let them be aware that a cop is hidding near by. Since this is an International form, I was wondering if they do the same thing in the country that you are in. It could be a topic in your English class. I just find it cool that it seems to be an International bit of kindness to help strangers avoid expensive speeding tickets. Wink

High speeds can certainly cause accidents, but not so much on wide open freeways.

Back to the original post... In my part of the US folks flash their headlights to let other drivers know that their lights are on high beam.

Thanks for the PM, Oskajojo, Next time, keep it to yourself. If you only want to read what you want to read then do not post idiotic comments on a discussion board.

I sent the PM because I didn't want this forum to be filled with people arguing back and forth, which seems to have failed. I wish that people could just respond to my question rather than look down on me for using the word "cool".

Thank you Slim, Ollie and Ariadna for replying to the topic !

İt happens every day,Turkey has one of the worst records for traffic accidents in the world, when you look at the size of the country and the number of cars its not a good thing .
I've seen the carnage and the aftermath, not pleasant, speed is the killer and anything that makes people slow down and save lives has to be a good thing ,in the long run more people will do it .
The word that bugged you, was İ think, unsuitable in your eyes because it had negative ramifications and your knee jerk reaction is unjustified .
I drive in this country ,alot, and the cops are not really helping the problem by stopping and fining people who drive too fast on a motorway or dual carrigeway, in the towns some people think they are on the open road where even 40 kph is too fast .
A lot of vehicles are overloaded or in bad condition with lights not working but they hardly get stopped ,these are as much of a danger .
Flashing lights to warn of an impending danger is cool to those who avoid it ,so try it ,it makes you feel good .

Speed doesn't cause accidents - poor driving does.

Ive lived in several parts of the US and flashing brights is a general warning. It can mean that there is a cop hidden ahead, you have your brights on, blinding oncoming traffic or it can mean that you have one or both headlights out. (Some people forget to turn them on, esp. on well-lighted roads)

While I dont argue that speed is dangerous, I must admit to having a lead foot and have been saved a few times by folks flashing their brights at me. I dont drive here in Mexico (too scared to) so I dont know if it is custom here.

Driving faster than a safe speed is one characteristic of poor driving in my book.

Isn't harassing drivers who are moving at unsafe speeds a characteristic of doing something to stop the carnage on the roads? I'm confused now.

_Exactly_ right - but can you please define what a safe speed is? Some relatively arbitrary number painted on a sign?

For example, most US interstates are posted as 65 mph. On a clear day with low traffic, a good driver can drive faster than this quite safely - but yet is still speeding.

Take that same interstate under blizzard conditions; it may not be safe to travel at 35 mph, yet someone driving 40 is both not speeding and driving unsafely.

In Japan we flash headlights to oncoming traffic letting them know they may turn in front of you or as a courtesy for them yielding to you.

Something else I believe unique to Japan is the practice of flashing your warning lights to the car behind you as a thank you for letting you in or as an apology for cutting in. The courtesy flash, I like it!

All I can say is...get cruise control fitted. I was 'caught' twice in the same day on the open highway in Australia, no other car, doing 10k's faster than the limit...no excuses...so I drove back to Melbourne, spent $500 on getting CC fitted, and used it.

Having said that, it is common in Australia to 'warn' other drivers...not just for the speed cameras, etc., but the booze buses, hazards ahead, etc. Knowing Aus, there's probably a law against warning others. Oh..and I always very politely flash the lights, and wave if a roadtrain or truck lets me pass.

I don't drive here in China, - I reckon you put your life in your hands every time you cross the road, get on a bus, take a trip. But I think the local drivers prefer the horn to flashing.
