A young lady invited me to go to a night market.

I assumed that she intended to have a customary date ... a man, a woman, some light conversation.

She picked me up. She was driving a car with her mom and her cousin in the back seat.

I've heard of chaperones, but this was ridiculous.

Are dates in Taiwan often chaperoned or do I just have a gift for attracting the unusual women?

Was I totally misreading the signals? Was this not intended to be a date, but rather a bizarre family outing?

neither. consider it a "just going to the night market" and things'll clear up. if you want to date her ask only her out.

I'd say it's quite typical of most single, Asian women, if they're living at home, and still traditionally inclined, to come with at least someone. It looks bad on their character otherwise. Some even freak out about this.

In Korea, if a woman comes alone to a man's apartment. it's an invitation for sex. At least the Koreans think so(By this I mean if they just have to come over and discuss something, have a chat, etc.)Usually when women asked me out, or wanted to do something, or when I had to meet them, they brought either a man or a woman along.

I don't know about Taiwan, but I'd assume it was even more reserved in this area. You can never actually tell sometimes, however, if Asian woman are interested as just a friend of as a girlfriend. Just play it casual, and see where it leads. Why worry about it anyway, unless you wanted to kiss on the first date(ha, ha.)
