Hi,
I would like to go to China with my husband sometime in September to teach. My husband does want to go but doesn't want to teach large groups of people. He is more comfortable teaching one or two people at a time. Would he be able to find a job like that?

Shouldn't be much of a problem if you look around.

He could be like a tutor, for example, to those of your students who need extra time to catch up, etc.

Good luck!

No employer of his will satisfy his extravagant wishes for small or micro-sized classes! The advice offered in the previous post means he must work on the sly. If you have a regular job (teaching classes of 40 students, or in private training centres, smaller ones at 10 to 25 students), your hubby will have to pick up the breadf crumbs from your table and work without permit. I don't know if your employer will accept this!

Why do you say 'he is more comfortable teaching one or two'?

That was my attitidue at first, I didn't want to teach classes and my first few classes I was quite nervous but I have been teaching for 2 months now and done about 20-25 classes in that time and it's not difficult and you get used to it.

If he has fear of teaching larger classes then I think he should face this fear, it good practice and it also improves your communication skills.

If after 3-4 months he is really not enjoying it he should be able to get VIP students quite easily.

As Rodger pointed out, no employer is going to allow you just to do VIP classes (no big money in it for them).

There is a chain of schools called Canilx with branches in Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Most of their classes are small in size, except for the craven "English Corner". I usually had 2 - 4 people in a private class. Its not perfect, but they paid on time and the facilities aren't outdated. I think Wall Street is similar, and they are a much larger chain.

Small classes are very hard to come by though, as the other posters pointed out. If he can afford to teach pro-bono for awhile, he could do some language exchanges or free tutoring until he got comfortable enough teaching to minister to larger groups. Trust me, anyone who wanted to teach 1 to 1 for free wouldn't have trouble finding students. Very Happy

Yes, I was scared out of my mind to stand up in front of a classroom of children for the first time 14 months ago but I soon adapted to it.

If you just come, I think you may find that your Husband (after sitting in on a couple of your classes) will gain the confidence he needs. It sounds to me like a simple lack of confidence and I can appreciate where he is coming from with that.

It is a wonderful life here and I recommend that you take the plunge.
