Hi. In February '05, my family (spouse, child, self) plans to move to Japan for work. We lived there before (88-97) but not as a family. I am seeking full-time ESL employment at a high school, jr high or community college. However, I'm finding listed positions on the Internet for mainly language schools, which I am not willing to do (again).
Does anyone have contacts, websites or advise on how to pursue a 8a-4pm teaching position from outside Japan? (I found wonderful high school teaching jobs while IN Japan yrs ago).
We would like to have employement/sponsorship/visa before we leave. I have an undergraduate degree in ElemEd and a Masters in Cross Cultural Studies. I have been invloved in the ESL field for 15 years, and I love to teach! But, I know the hardest part of many jobs is GETTING it (especially for someone older--over 39).
Any ideas? ~Thanks.
PS My spouse is a non-native English speaker (but American); I am the only one seeking the teaching position, so we can't do the "couple jobs" out there. |

sheera, I think you will have a VERY hard time getting a position from outside the country unless the school can actually meet you and you can attend an interview in person. walking into a high school job is virtually impossible just based on a couple of emails and some letters, and no person will likely take a chance on introducing some one they have never met before.
There are no community colleges in Japan, only Junior colleges (two years) and trade schools (semongakkos)
Just curious: how old is your child and what do you plan to do about sending him/her to school here? Do you think you can support 3 people on what you earn? I support a non-working spouse and two kids with schooling costs etc and you will have a hard time even on a high school salary and working full time. |

I really wouldn't say it's a good idea moving your whole family here. There is a LOT of racism in schools that your child will be facing from students AND teachers. |
