Hi, I'm planning on arriving in China in early January. I hope to find a job as quickly as possible teaching english, but have some concerns about my timing. Are there better and worse times to be looking for jobs because of the beginning and end of semesters?....what is the semester schedule in China?
Thanks |

i think that you can generally find a job at the beginning of any new term since some people only sign 6month contracts and then move on. have you considered a recruitment-agency? it might save you hassle! |

I don't think it should be too much of a problem. The normal semester started in September but now there are still heaps of foreign teaching positions available.
I even saw something like '300 teaching positions available now' on the job forum the other day. |

We will break up for the holidays on 14th January 2005. As Chinese New Year is around the 9th February, I think, School will recommence about a week after that. So, your timing is not too bad, as long as you have some money to carry you for a few weeks. |

So does this mean that the winter holiday will be around a week shorter this year?
lsat year we finished our term on about the 1st January and didn't start again til the 9th February. This year it seems that the term will end on 14th January and begins on the 17th Feb. Argh! |

Do not panic yet! You all KNOW how hard it is to pin the Chinese people down to an exact date,
The ONLY way I managed to pull it off this time is that I was forced to buy a ticket out of China when I came here this time (at the Brisbane Airport).
I bought a ticket to Hong Kong and so I needed to change the date on it and hence I had to pin them down to a date.
If you remember Chinese New Year was the 22nd January (I think) this year and next year it is the 9th February (I am fairly sure).
All that means is that our holidays will start later. We started on the 31st December last year. Next year we will commence on the 14th January.
It does not mean that your holidays will be shorter - just starting later.
I presume you will get the same amount of time off. If I remember correctly - we were off from 31st December to the 8th February, so that is about 5 - 6 weeks also. |

Thanks for the info anyone! Any feedback on when that February starting semester will go until? Trying to figure out travel plans....if I sign a contract for one semester, will I have the summer (July/August) off?
I'm sure these questions have obvious answers, but I greatly appreciate the help! |
