London Angel,
take this piece of advice: come to China, get your bearings, find out where your students stand in English, then decide what you should do, and what resources to access! Your employer ought to provide you with materials anyway - though mine doesn't give a hoot nor a book!
"Science or technology" students, hahaha! Do you expect aspiring civil engineers dreaming up their CHinese version of a 200-floor World Trade Centre???
My university pompously refers to itself as U. of technology", but when I give writing lessons, I have to plead with my students to please, please, PLEASE bring their own a 4 size paper and a pen!
Most of these children, sorry: 22-year olds hang out at internet cafes all night and come to class bleary-eyed, with their mobile phones ringing in the middle of a lesson!
I then proceed to snatch their cellphone and bark into it: "Class in progress... your boyfriend is sitting right beside his new flame!" |

i agree with roger!
if they consider your class as a serious lesson, they'll have an appropriate textbook. if not, it's whatever you make of it.
if it's oral, forget about terminology and get them talking about something, anything. |

I'm in the same situation as you, I guess. I'm teaching doctoral students (in mixed-English level groups ), and a lot of them are chemists, physicists, etc. What you might do is ask them (if you haven't already) what they WANT to learn about in the class. It may be that they want to talk about football and pop music and culture and stuff rather than job-related things. You also might get some articles off the Internet -- news stories, for instance -- that related to their major, and then have them discuss the articles -- you'll have to come up with set questions for them to answer because a lot of Chinese students can't deal with free talk. Another thing I'm doing is soliciting people I know who work in fields related to my students' subject to write a short piece about their daily lives as teachers, biologists, etc., and use that for class discussion. |
