Mods please delete AKATDN remark about the "pompous ass." It's personally offensive and inappropriate behaviour on these boards.

As for Chinese culture (or your insinuation that I know nothing about it), I don't claim to be an expert. However, to my credit I have: 1) my residence here 2) my ability in the language. I will not call myself fluent, but I am conversant to a fairly high degree. I also am fairly literate and can read most of what I see around me. 3) I grew up among Asians (I come from Vancouver) 4) I am in a long term relationship with a woman of Chinese ancestry and have constant contact with her local family members. As for reading up on Chinese culture, I have done so quite extensively. Have you? No. So, as far as Chinese culture is concerned, while I'm not claiming to be an expert, I'm a professor when compared to you.

I'm not a know-it-all sort, nor am I a "pompous ass" (I'll thank you in advance for deleting those comments. They cross a line that shouldn't be crossed on the net). That's just more childish mudslinging on your part. Can't deal with someone on the level of debate? Resorting to namecalling is the tactic of choice for those less intellectually endowed. You do that a few times in your last post. It doesn't reflect on you very highly, not that anyone here likes you anyway.
Grow up AKATDN.

BTW. I gather from one of your other posts that you are attempting to return to Korea. Let me be the first to say: don't let the door hit you in the rear on your way out of here!

TS, I don't mind your arguments. But the way you come across sounds rather pompous, doesn't it!? YOu seem to be loving it here, and I'm glad for you. But this doesn'[t mean the negativity doesn't exist, and that just because you've learned to suck up a little!!

But the way you come across is like you're the only one here who has the last say, which seems to be rather popmpous to me.

I beg to differ, of course. I come accross as pompous (to you only) because I disagree with you. I don't try to have the last word on everything. One of the reasons I read boards like this one is to learn something and check out the experiences of my fellow expat. However, I won't let someone who clearly doesn't know what he's talking about dominate discussions. Won't even offer comment on your less intelligeable nonsense. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not the only one who has challenged you on this board.

I suppose another reason I sound pompous to you is I don't communicate at your level. I argue only from evidence and experience. I don't resort to mudslinging and generalizations.

Yes, I am settled here and liking it. Does that bother you somehow? I have no problem getting work and find life here to actually be pretty easy. What's the main reason for this? Attitude. If you took a long look in the mirror and analyzed your past failures, you may be able to overcome your largest obstacle to your success: You have a terrible attitude and that is evident from your posts. Rather than calling a settled and successful teacher in Taiwan "pompous" while slinging mud at the Taiwanese, I invite you to work on becoming a success here, too. It's not the world (or me... or the other users here) that's wrong, akatdn; it's you.

Now, now, that would be against the rules of this forum wouldn't it Wink

I believe that Brian got booted off for posting the real identity and a picture of Jason Seeburn at the time that Seeburn was getting up everyones nose. Although it is against the rules of this board to publically out someone, I think that of all of the people on this board, Seeburn had it coming.

By the way, I have it on good authority that all of the information provided in the outing of Seeburn was found within the Taiwan forum of this very site. Basically, Seeburn used to post under another name here. The posting signature of that other user contained a link to a website that was hosted by Seeburn and which had a lovely picture of Jason and some of his students. Unfortunately for him it also had his real name too. So a good bit of detective work got Brian booted off this forum.

From the discussion on this very matter over at Forumosa, it seems pretty clear that EOD was only too happy to pull the plug on Brian as Brian had embarassed EOD on more than one discussion on this site Embarassed

I guess anyone wouldn't be stultified or booted off if it weren't for the honesty of making a comment in light of some of this backlashing going on. I finds the whole dishonesty question one that has to be addressed here, if not regressed.

Some like to play it like it's their hand, as if they've got all the aces in the pocket. For us as Enlish teches, it's a joke. THere'sa no honesty or conract to abide by. It's like you're used here, and nothing else. As a froeignewr, a conract shoud stand for somthing, just so you don't get used, and abused, which is what I'm talkin gabout. Fortunately, TS an some of the others have found a safegouard, their own CHinese safehaven, something that seems to me to but teplicte the prejudice that a foriigner is noththing.

CHeck it out. THe dishonesty here is reampant, rife. YOu can't hold a job unless you have connections, which is nothing but a farce, and a lie. IN KOrea, at least a contract meant something. Here it means little if not anything, since they could dismiss you without cause, and without reason.

DOn't tell me. TS,. you know the sum and substance of it alll. Something must be done to make these employeres wake up to a form of justice.

AKATDN, they dismissed you with cause. Believe me, there was cause. The cause was you. Schools here are desperate for teachers. If you manage to get yourself fired here, you suck. Very simple. It's not about connections or anything else. It's not about contracts. You were in the probationary period of your employment. They decided to cut you loose within that time frame rather put up with you for the whole year. I invite you to improve your horrible attitude (and your spelling) and enjoy more success here (or Korea). You can call me know-it-all or whatever you want and sling mud at me till the cows come home. I don't really care. But the truth is clear: Until you improve your attitude, you're going to continue your pattern of failures. Geography (as in where you are) and the Chinese are not your problems. Your problem lies within. But go on, call me a new name; continue to insult and flame me, dude. It only makes you look bad, believe me.

Like I care whether you do or not! I notice though that you make reference in your most recent post to some of the remarks that I made so I assume that you did actually take the time to read it.

Too bad that you failed to answer the direct questions that I asked. Here they are again just in case you missed them:

1. What are your experiences based upon AKATDN?
2. How long have you been here?

Your quesitons all sound like one-up-man ship, as if you've got the right. What a joke.
3. How many employers have you had?
4. How long did you stay with each of these employers?

Check out this rude and racist remark by TS: "Do you really think you have support on this forum? It's nearly unanimous."

Umm...actually this statement is most certainly not racist, and I am not so sure that it is even rude. It is factual though!

A.K.A.T.D.N. wrote:
And how many users do you have on this forum, TS? You, Wombat and Taylor? Maybe Katie and Colin? Hmnn, makes me wonder if they're related.

Well looking at the people who have actually posted on this board recently I can concurr with TaoyuanSteve that every one has had an issue with your offtopic and laborious posts. Wombat, TaoyuanSteve, Taylor, Mark Holmes..., Colin, Kait to name a few. Wait a minute, with the exception of Aristotle that is basically a list of everyone that actually offers information here.

A.K.A.T.D.N. wrote:
...and good old alter ego Wombat/Taylor, and call this UNANIMOUS, then I must laugh.

After getting a roasting from Taylor and Mark Holmes on another thread, you suggested that they must therefore be one and the same.

Further up this thread you suggested that Taoyuan Steve and Wombat must be one and the same.

Now you seem to be suggesting that Wombat and Taylor are one and the same.

Can't you just accept that you are in a minority of one on this board. This is not because you are not knowledgible about Taiwan. It is because you are not knowledgible about Taiwan but pretend to be an authority on the subject.

A.K.A.T.D.N. wrote:
And then Wombat says I'm using generalizations. Perhaps he doesn't understand quotes, or examples, or personal experiences that not only I've had, but others as well.

I must have missed the specific examples and personal experiences that you have posted here that show how dishonest the majority of Chinese people are (as per your claim). Please feel free to direct me to these and make me eat my words.

A.K.A.T.D.N. wrote:
As for Aristotle's comment about lying-if it was him- I actually found this out to be quite true when I gave you the example of the employer trying not to pay me on time by saying "The president isn't here today. We'll pay you on Monday." THIS, AS YOU MAY NOTE, WAS A BLATANT LIE so as to not pay on time.

So from one single experience you feel that it is accurate to attempt to extrapolate this across to accurately reflect the majority of the population here in Taiwan. Can't you see the fundamental flaw in your theory - let me give you a hint - it lies with your sample size. You are basing your theories about a whole population upon one single negative personal experience!!!

You suggest in your quote above that we may note that your employer's statement was a lie. How exactly could this be the case? Either the president of the company was there or he/she wasn't. Are you trying to suggest that the president of the company was in fact there, but was hiding somewhere in the building so as not to have to pay you until the following Monday? Another quick question that stems from your claims about how dishonest and money minded Chinese people are (in your eyes):

Did you or did you not eventually receive the pay that you refer to?

A.K.A.T.D.N. wrote:
If you know anything about the Chinese culture. . .oh, I'm wasting my time here.

Finally something that I think that the majority of this board will agree with you on!!!!

Well, you still haven't answered the questions.

No it's not a case of upmanship, it is simply a case of attempting to determine upon what basis you make your claims about your experiences in Taiwan. It is pretty clear from the posts that you make that you have absolutely no idea of what goes on here in Taiwan, and this would seem to suggest that you are indeed a newbie, but I thought that I would show you the respect of enabling you to inform us about your expertise. From your lack of an answer to simple questions it has become pretty obvious that you don't have any real expertise to speak of, and a lack of experience here in Taiwan to boot. Oh well, just clarifying your relevance to the Taiwan forum.
