Apply to the JET program! I am currently an ALT working for a private ALT company and not a day goes by that I don't wish I were a JET ALT. Email me and I can tell you in general what is seriously wrong with these private ALT companies.
Working directly for a school board is possible and the jobs are there. All you really need do is search around on the internet and ask people that would know and you should find a job. There might even be an exchange available with your city and a Japanese one.
Again, working JET or direct hire is the best way. STAY AWAY FROM THE PRIVATE ALT COMPANIES! |

It's isn't that easy to get a job working directing through the school board. It is actually quite difficult, and often comes down to knowing somone or being in the right place at the right time. |

As far as dispatch companies go, I also heard that Altia is one of the better ones. They have a lot of people in the burbs around Nagoya. From the teachers I talked to, they get paid the same every month (no partial pay during summer or winter vacation) and have minimal interference from management. Basically get put in a school and told 'go'. Plus a company car- if you can call a yellow plate white kei-jidousha a car.
The others like W5 are vultures. Pay by the day, no benefits, no pay in vacations or exam periods, a generally crap system. |

This is a bit of a pipe dream. Walk in to any local BOE in Japan and you'll be lucky to find one person who speaks English. Hence, the reason (among others) the BOEs use dispatch companies in the first place. Unless you know someone in the BOE, you'd be hard-pressed to land a position directly with the city in question. |

The topic of sister cities was mentioned. My hometown is actually sister cities with Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture. Would this improve my chances of being directly hired? |

Depends on a few factors. First, how many JET Program ALTs they are using now, does the City feel it needs more than JET can provide, is there money in the budget to hire additional ALTs, is there some exchange program between the two cities in question, etc. Check with your town first to see if there is any such possibility. Good luck. |
