I hear that it is an absolutely beautiful part of Mexico, especially the eastern part of the state. I hear that there is lush rain forest, and lots of outdoors activities. I think there are some Huastec "Indians" there, who are a unique branch of the Maya. I've heard that it is fairly cheap to live there. Has anyone in this lovely cafe worked in SLP, or perhaps just traveled through? Thoughts, impressions?

That depends on whether you are talking about the state of SLP or the city of SLP. There is a lush green area on the eastern edge of the state, but most of the state would best be described as arrid semi-desert. The city itself has a small but charming centro historico. I never lived there, but I knew enough people who did. Not much of a nightlife, but they did enjoy their time in SLP.

The cost of living is deceptive. Sure it sounds cheap when you compare it to back home, but when you realize how little money you will be making, suddenly it's not so cheap.

Read some of the older entries in the job information journal, there are some stories from SLP for you to get some idea of what others have found.

I didn't mean to scare you. Sorry for that. I just wanted you to be aware. If you do go, it's a good idea to have money in your bank account back home that you can access through an ATM. That way, if things don't go well for you, at least you can have enough to get back home again.

I'm not saying that things will be bad, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

You should have at least $2,000 us as an emergency fund in the bank back home that you won't touch unless you have to return home.

You should also have at least that much as expense money to help you get set up. Sure you might be able to do it much cheaper, I did, but then you probably won't be enjoying your life very much if all you have to live on is what you earn as a teacher.


I don't know where you plan on working, if it's for ITESM then you can disregard most of what I said above. ITESM pays a decent salary, language institutes (for the most part) don't.

I just spent the summer in San Luis Potosi, SLP, and LOVED it. I found the people there very hospitable and the scenery is great, lots of trees and greenery and nice plazas and parks. The weather was also fabulous. It was never very hot at all, and apparently, the winters aren't bad either. It was definitely typical "mountain" weather. The city is very clean, too, even in the centro historico. I also felt reasonably safe there. It definitely is not the cheapest place to live, but it isn't horrible either. A lot of the population is middle class, so nightlife isn't too cheap, but it is definitely a lot of fun. I would agree that the costs seem low but there isn't any place where the pay is that good. But believe me, the standard of living is more than decent. To me, it was typical inland Mexico and had few tourists and nice people. I would definitely recommend it, especially for those who want a typical Mexican experience (not a touristy one). You'll get into the culture instantly there.
