Only you can decide whether health insurance is worth whatever cost you have to pay. Too few details on your background make it practically impossible to give sound advice.

National health insurance pays for 70% of your medical costs, and all up front (except for childbirth, but you do get most of that back soon). If you get on NHI right now, you will have to make back payments for the 4 months that you were working without it. The first year it runs about 2500 yen/month. Most other outfits from overseas tend to pay you AFTER the fact that you have paid for the whole cost of medical service. Do you really have that kind of money on hand? One person just wrote in that he was unable to shell out 50,000 yen after getting treatment for falling down a flight of stairs.

So, what is your situation? How long do you plan to stay? Do you have any regular illnesses or ailments that you feel would need taking care of? Can you predict never getting sick with 100% efficiency?

Hi Glenski,

Could you possibly give me your idea of a ballpark figure for health insurance for me?

i'm here on a two year contract, been here for 4 months already, living in shizuoka. still not sure which type of health insurance to get because i heard going private is a lot cheaper, but then i dont know where to look for it. i heard the goverment one is good, but after the second year, the prices sky rocket. thats what my boss told me. even the guy who i took over for said a big chunk of his money came out for insurance. i know i should get insurance soon but i dont know which one is the best policy. would you recommend me to get government issued? thanks

You've been in this country for fifteen years. Why would you have to ask me this about national health insurance? Don't you have any insurance?

Check out Global for ballpark figures on foreign insurance.

Thanks Glenski,

I know about NHI, too dear and doctors I would go to usually don't take it. No, I presently have none and thanks for the tip on Global.
