America TV is a lot better than it was in the 70s and 80s - shows like '6 Feet Under', 'Sex and the City', 'The Sopranos', '24', 'The West Wing' have all challenged moribund TV norms.

Sorry but Im going to have to disagree with you there Captain!
sorry!
what about all those great shows of the 70s and 80s from the States.......

....."happy days"....the Fonz!

....."The streets of san franscisco", cool, good music, great storyline with mike douglas and that guy who looked like a potato

....."cagney and Lacey", jesus the tension in it!

....."the A team", utter sh ite but very watchable, what young lad of 10 didnt dream of blowing up cars like murdoch or hitting on the ladies like face, and how cool does a show have to be to have Mr T and boy george in the same episode (hell he got more jewellry than me!!!), and remember nobody ever got killed in it, good clean fun!

......"Kojak", what a programme, telly is the man

......"Colombo", peter faulk, man i loved that show, who didnt!?

....."Ironside", that was the 70s man!

......"the waltons----highway to heaven" combo for those of us who liked a bit of morality inbetween sunday midday lunch and just before the footy starts on the box, always was a bit sad but you had to like the guy

..."the dukes of hazzard", more cheese, but i like cheese, especially cheese in very short skirts and fast cars

"magnum PI", that moustache is infamous

"murder she wrote"

"moonlighting", oh so how we forget!

"the wonder years", ah poor kevin, will he ever get that girl

"la law"

"Jake and the fat man"

"the hulk", that scared the living shit out of me!!

anyway i prefer these shows than todays, yes maybe their storylines were not the best but they were cool
what do you think!?

Benno's right, 70's and 80's shows were great. A lot of those shows still stand the test of time as well, Columbo for instance remains addictive viewing and possibly the greatest enemy to 100% employment in this country whilst they continue to show it during the day.

Can't recall any great recent dramas, so I'm delving through the past here:

1. Doctor Who
Captain Yossarian was right about the special effects, but a wonderful programme. Tom Baker was always the best IMO. This reminds me of a quote by Nick Hancock on BBC TV about footballer Peter Beardsley: "He's the only player who, when he appears on TV, Daleks hide behind the sofa."

2. MASH
Hawkeye, BJ, Radar, Clinger, lots of memorable characters.

3. The Prisoner
Patrick McGoohan display lots of charisma and quirkiness in this surreal series. The drama was a sort of continuation from Danger Man.

The original Auf Wiedersehen Pet was fabulous. I remember watching it with a German friend (an English teacher) and he couldn't understand a word! Have you seen the new series? I haven't heard too much about that.

The new version of Doctor Who comes out next year. I am amazed the BBC waited 15 years because it is bound to be a huge hit.

ShapeSphere - your joke about Peter Beardsley reminded me that a Liverpool fan once told me that the reason Beardsley was sold was because he was having an affair with Kenny Dalgliesh's wife. Poor Kenny!

Benno:

Kojak is being updated for this decade. Starring Ving Rhames as Kojak (an African-American actor. It will be a television program on the USA Network, I believe.

Dukes of Hazzard is being formed into a modern big-screen movie (with new actors, naturally. Sometimes these things work, sometimes they S-U-C-K!! Loved The Brady Bunch Movie and really got a kick out of Charlie's Angels and Starsky and Hutch. Hated the SECOND Brady Bunch Movie as well as the second Charlie's Angels, Beverly Hillbillies, and more I can't think of right now).

Nicole Kidman will be seen next year in the big screen version of Bewitched. Hmmm, maybe.
