I'd like to collect a list of quotes, but only the best and only those having to do with travel, life as an expat, teaching, learning, and language, so most "witty quotes" lists already out there aren't what I want.
So many of you have such clever quotes but the task of cutting and pasting all of them myslef is a bit daunting, and I can't remember who has what clevever quote.
Would you pretty please enter them in here? Or any others that you run across? |

A slightly different quote from the one above can be found in the movie, "The School of Rock" when the Jack Black character says to a group of teachers during lunch recess in the dining hall:
"Those who can do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE [physical education]."
I think a lot of us can relate to that one! |

Hi Merlin,
Over three years ago, as I was still working up enough courage to leave my homeland in order to work somewhere in East Asia, I came across Dave's ESL Cafe. I soon became hooked ! One of the first postings on Dave's that I read contained the following quotation, regarding the benefits of travel, that I subsequently decided to save to a floppy - but which I soon forgot about until just last weekend when I was perusing some of my old discs. So, here it is - I hope that the 'paste' function is working !
( WARNING: if anyone is easily offended by references to the 'G' word, quickly go onto the next posting ! )

"When you travel, you experience, in a very practical way, the act of rebirth. You confront completely new situations, the day passes more slowly, and on most journeys you don't even understand the language the people speak so you are like a child just out of the womb. You begin to attach much more importance to the things around you because your survival depends upon them. You begin to be more accessible to others because they may be able to help you in difficult situations. And you accept any small favor from God with great delight, as if it were an episode you would remember for the rest of your life. At the same time, since all things are new, you see only the beauty in them, and you feel happy to be alive."
(From "The Pilgrimage" by Paul Coelho)

My modified version of that quote:
"Those who can do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach PE. Those who can't teach PE, teach EFL." Chris
Sorry, Couldn't Resist.
Anyway, some real quotes I found and live by.
"Travelers never think that they are the foreigners." Mason Cooley
"The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." St. Augustine
"I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma." Eartha Kitt
And also just one quote I think is so true it's scary,
"Not only does the English Language borrow words from other languages, it sometimes chases them down dark alleys, hits them over the head, and goes through their pockets" Eddy Peters
Cheers

Must have been one of those qualities in a person he recognized, but didn't have himself? |

I know you meant "travel",but you wrote "tavel",so I will contribute a Tavel quote:
Tavel
The "first ros of France" and of the Cotes du Rhone, famous since the 10th century, Tavel wines were present on the Pope's table when the papacy was located in Avignon in the 14th century. This wine is produced with a number of wine varieties. Smooth, generous and fruity, with an amber-shaded color of incredible intensity, it shows hints of topaz-colored reflections on aging. Its connoisseurs appreciate it young and fresh, richly telling of all the scents and flavors of the southern French hills.
And, it's nice with mussels marinara. Or a Big Mac. |

Several good ones in here. I'm cutting and pasting as fast as I can.
I might even look in the local supermarket for a box of that tavel wine. |
