If anyone is interested, the animal quarantine system for cats and dogs has changed as of November 4, 2004. The quarantine time has been changed from a minimum of 14 days to 12 hours with the proper paper work and procedures. Yay! For more info check out http://www.maff-aqs.go.jp/english/ryoko/ba.htm.
I plan on bringing my cat with me when I go so this greatly minimizes concerns about the quarantine process. Now all I have to do is get a job and an apartment! Please don't post any lectures about why I shouldn't bring my cat. I've already searched this topic in the forum and read all the posts. I know the risks and I know that both my cat and I can handle it.
If anyone has successfully brought their pet to Japan, I would like to hear your advice on the subject. Mostly about how to get an apartment that allows pets. Did you have to make any deals with the landlord? etc

Here is a thread for you.

This is not a negative reply, but just a heads up for those people who have NOT read what you have... finding an apartment in Japan that will allow you to have pets is very difficult. Even Japanese people have problems. Ok, now read that link. |

Some info that I forgot to mention in that thread...
When I was looking to rent an apartment, I told my agent that I had a cat. He couldn't find anything that allowed pets (I think it's just standard to put 'no pets' in the contract.)
Anyhow, finally he just asked "Is your cat quiet?" and found me a place.
That was Nomura Realty.
Otherwise, I think/hope the agency I posted will help out with finding a 'legal' place for pet owners!
Are you already a member of angelswithfur? It's a Yahoo group for pet owners in Japan.
Good news about quarantine! |

No I'm not but I will be soon Of course I don't live in Japan yet, but give me 6 months, heehee.
I guess I always could hide him in my apartment. He is very quiet and doesn't have front claws. He wouldn't scratch what ever furniture there is in the apartment or the wallpaper. Not that he wouldn't try lol. He has what I call "phantom claws".
Thanks for the info madeira |
