Hi

my first post here, so be kind to me! I'm a new ESL teacher looking for my first job, and am thinking about thailand. I have seen internet adverts for King's College in Bangkok, and am thinking of sending my CV and applying. Can anyone tell me anything about them!? are they a good and genuine school!?

Thanks in advance!!

Hello Newbie:

I have no first-hand experience with this school.

As with most language schools, you'll find a mix of both positive & negative reports on the Job Information Journal here at Dave's.

The positive feedback does seem to outweigh the negative, imho.
__________

the 2 extracts below were reposted from the Job Information Journal:

"I have had a good look at jobs in Thailand and I can thoroughly recommend Kings College. They look after all their staff by paying on time (low wages by western standards, but average salary in Thailand terms)and providing teaching certificate and work permit within 3 months. If I was asked to come back and teach at Kings Emporium I wouldn't hesitate." Howard Rickman --- posted October 17, 2003

"I worked at King's College in BKK from July 2001 - Jan 2003. Overall it was a good experience. The school is professionally run, lots of resources/facilities and a pleasant working environment. The hours, although variable, are not excessive and the pay acceptable. Of the three schools I have worked for in Asia I would rate it as easily the best and a good first job after a TEFL qualification." Andrew Maile ---- posted 24th August, 2003

If you haven't already found it, you can browse their website: http://www.kingsthailand.com/

I see they have a branch at the Emporium Mall in BKK where I went shopping today for Mont Blanc ink refills. That's a nice part of town. They also have a branch in Chiang Mai, which would be a nice change of scenery after a year or 2 in Bangkok.

Hi Newbie
I went for an Interview for Kings last year just after I passed my CELTA. I thought that most comments on Dave's ESL were positive so it looked a good prospect. The guy who interviewed me in London (John I think) was a nice chap. He showed me pictures of the accommodation I would stay in and the school premises. It all looked very clean and hygienic and I was interested. I finally decided to go to China. Was a bit skint at the time and Kings wanted two months up front rent. The accommodation seemed a little pricey considering the wage and I just thought that I would end up with no cash to enjoy Thailand. I'm not sure if I have made the right decision though - I am in a Chinese Uni with students who could not give a monkeys about English, My city is quite polluted and cold, there are not many foreigners to have a laugh with and communicating with the Chinese I find difficult. My travels in Thailand were much more fun and I am heading there in January for a nose - Who knows I may even end up in Kings!!!
I wish you all the best

i worked for kings in two of their branches. emporium and bangna. kings have a good reputation in bangkok. the money they pay is slightly above average, the support staff are extremely helpful, the people you'll be working with will be like-minded with yourself and bangkok is a quality place to live. i wish i was still there somedays...

the accomodation is (as you say) clean, but its also spacious.

the hours are reasonable.

not sure what else i can say to persuade you.

apply with confidence that you'll be working for a good company. any specific questions, let me know.
