The "object"??? GeminiTiger, I often labour over the meanings of your sentences; are you perhaps a native Chinglish author?

I, too, failed to see the racism. Maybe you need to spell it out for us...

Roger,
Where to begin with you. First off, If I was a native Chinese or
any other race on this planet it would make me no more or no
less valuable or authoritative. I think its funny how you and many
others go around calling people Chinese. What exactly are you
implying and why do you ask? Are you a racist too? As to your
question, I dont think the answer matters.

Secondly Roger, I am sorry that the use of the sentance,
"The object of the story is supposedly H'mong." confused you.
I should have used the word "person", I apologize. I have been
studying philosophy and computer science for the last five years
and the word "object" is almost universally understable in that
lingo to replace virtual or real people, places or things. I realize
however that concept is not common.

Is it? I thought the "You're a mong" line probably came from the word "mongol" which used to be a common (but politically incorrect) way of referring to people with Downs Syndrome. Granted, this isn't very nice and as the derogatory term comes about from people thinking those with DS have mongoloid features, I suppose it could be construed as racist. But, in any event, the "object" of the song is not Hmong; it is the person in the song who allegedly can't spell and smells of wee.

'You're a mong' is kind of a tame playground insult in England; if you were to be offended by it (on the playground), your overreaction would probably be met with, 'Don't (h)ave (a)n eppy!'

I'm not sure about the exact origin but saloc is probably right.

Dear dmb: Not neccessarily. He may have been referring to the upper of the various notches which belong to you and simply have omitted the rest of the sentence, deeming its inclusion to be superfluous as obvious from the context.

Dear GeminiTiger.

nb. The usual spelling of 'sentance' is sentence. (People in glass houses and all that ...).

ps. saloc is correct: In the cartoon under discussion the 'Mong' is obviously used as an abbreviation of 'Mongol' a common and derogratory English expression used either to indicate somebody with Downs syndrome or impute the existence, in the person referred to, of characteristics similar to those supposedly displayed by people with Downs syndrome.

DearGT. You criticised dmb earlier in the thread for opening a post with a short sentence omitting any verb.

Perhaps by 'Where to begin with you' [??????] you mean 'Where should I ....'

In either case it appears that the sentence is meant as a (rhetorical) question and therefore needs an indication of such (a question mark).

Also, you criticised dmb earlier in the thread for omitting a capital letter after a full stop.

'First off, If..' appears either to lack a full stop or contain an erroneous example of capitalisation.

Also I note that you

I'm not sure where to begin with the errors of grammar, punctuation and fact in the above sentence. I think that you wish to claim that the word 'object' can be used to indicate, or stand for, virtual or real people, places or things. One word can only replace (an)other word or words.

I am not sure that anything can be said to be 'almost universally understandable' in any 'lingo'. Commonly 'lingo' is used as an abbreviation for 'language'. The subjects of philosophy and computer science have generated their own 'jargon' (specialised language used by insiders to obscure the subject and exclude others) but hardly a 'lingo'. In either case a 'lingo' is, by definition a 'language' and thus only locally, not universally recognisable and when used as an inaccurate synonym for a collection of jargon can, by definition, never be (almost) universally recognisable.

I think that what you wish to claim to recognise is that the use of 'object' in such manner is not common. You have not said that. Neither have you said that the use of said concept in said manner is either common or uncommon. I presume by 'concept' you mean the usage of the word 'object' in the manner in which you have attempted to use it. even allowing for this generous interpretation of your sentence, which appears to be the only interpretation that allows it almost to make sense, it would appear that you have omitted a 'that' that would allow the sentence to stand as an example of a grammatically correct english sentence, albeit one containing words whose referants are unclear.

My best attempt at turning your sentence into meaningful English would be that you wished to say that you realise that (such a use of) that concept is not common.

If so you are incorrect. It is very common to use the word 'object' when referring to the object of a sentence.

Good luck with your philosophical studies.

I thank you for your long detailed critique amounting to nearly three paragraphs in regard to the one sentence I wrote in a previous post. By the time I'm teaching next year and have a few hundred more posts I am sure you guys will have me in top form. For the record I claim no extended mastery of the English language and only pointed out the OPs mistakes because it was after all him who started this line of attack.

I do however disagree with a variety of points in your critique. As I mentioned I do have an extensive background in both computer science and philosophy. While they do have separate lingos in the case of the word object, people educated in either discipline would be able to relate to the meaning I put forth and in the manner I described, not as a matter of opinion but as a matter of fact. I suggest you consult Platos Theory of Forms or Aristotles The Four Causes. As for computer science, the dominant programming method for the last ten years is OOP, object orientated programming. It is clear to me you have no education in either discipline and wonder why you would take on the task of arguing a point that has already been apologized and explained for, other then to pick a fight. Kudos though for your ability to do so with out making an outright personal attack, that puts you in a rare bracket around here.

Finally to restate my position, the original poster, is still in the wrong coming to an ESL site to propagate cartoons with racist themes, or to attack someone with a learning disibility. Further, I am glad a moderator deleted his pornography cartoon post/link. If this is your interest there are no end to sites (YES ON THE INTERNET, I AM SORRY I DIDNT ADD TO THE INTERNET I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO GET THE GIST OF THINGS) to visit that will give you what you are looking for.
