Maybe it is fate that you decline this postion. It seems from most people who post here that arranging a job before you get here is full of potential trouble.
If in fact the school waits for you, then you will have to start immediately and not have any time to catch your breath and check out the school when you arrive. And the school will have you under a (more intense) microscope from the word go.
Tell them your intinerary, and that you'll need a day or two to settle into their system, etc. If that's not acceptable, decline the position. You don't need the hassle.
You contacted the native English speakers there, right? Oh, what's that? No other native speakers? Didn't contact anyone for a reference???? The boss never gave you any contact info?
Always look for a school with a few native speakers. You don't want to be the only one. I was the solitary English speaker at a school when I arrived and will never do that again.
Also, teachers being fired is not exactly common here. Most schools go to a lot of trouble to hire a teacher and will tolerate most native English speakers as long as they show up every day and execute some sort of lesson.
So be wary! There's no rush. |

well, things all worked out! I still have the job, they are giving me a few days to settle in and then I go through training. I did receive many references from english teachers that work or have workkes for them (5 in total, all whom responded). I do believe this is a good school, and I think they were just stressed too (as everyone is entitled to). The teacher that was there was just a sub (who didn't really want to teach kids but was helping out). The position was originally for november start and they have held the position for me since then.
All in all, things will work out! Starting to sink in now that I'm moving to another country, lol. I'm done my freal out session, heehee. Looking forward to a new beginning! Thanks for all your support on my posting/vent. Greatly appreciated! |
