People celebrate Christmas in different ways and for different reasons. Why do you celebrate Christmas? |

Christmas is the time to give thanks, truly, for what we have.
Honour our life.
Honour the people near to us.
Give people something so they remember us, something they will enjoy.
Bring cheer to others.
Religiously, Jesus gave Himself so we could ascend to heaven. He gave us something.
It is not under us to give something back to those who are in need.
This Christmas I will give to someone in need. |

Why not? I am one of those lucky few who actually enjoy the silly season. |

If I am back in Scotland it is because the guilt card has been played and I feel I should go home. If I am here it is a good excuse to get together with a group of friends and then overeat and drink. |

what about christmas in non-christian countries? I am teaching my muslim students (kids) about santa, presents, christmas trees, songs, the whole package. Santa even comes to school sometimes and hands out gifts! But here in Turkey, none of this has anything to do with dec.25, or the birth of christ. This is all strictly about New Years. On New Years Day, Santa comes and brings gifts, etc...
is this still christmas?
Did anyone see the Ramadan Bayram photos from Felluce (turkish spelling... I think the English is Felluja?) Iraq. They had kids on rides at the fair grounds with Santa and Mickey Mouse wandering around with ballons. wierd stuff. |

Christmas is a Christian thing meaning Christ's Mass as a celebration of his birthday. Maybe in Turkey they just don't want to miss out on the prezzies.
I love xmas anyway and this year I intend to by a prezzie for the Pass the Parcel Appeal which sends presents to underprivaleged children. |

I get all caught up in the decorations, the lights, the Christmas songs, the smells, etc. I'm not Christian, and I am not living in a Christian country at the moment. Japan being fairly materialistic, however, Christmas is everywhere here! (At least in all of the shops.)
I will be staying in Japan this Christmas, so I will miss the sights, sounds, smells, and warmth of my parents' home. No worries, though, because mom will be coming here in early December (not for Xmas Day ), so I get to try to get my house all set up for her.

I actually disliked Christmas all my life until last Christmas here in China. It was a really wonderful day (apart from the bl***y media) and the Orphans got a thrill out of opening their presents.
I intend making this Christmas Day even bigger and better.
The children gave me a present (a silk scarf) and I managed to hold it together until one of the older boys played "My heart will go on" from the Titanic, on some sort of musical instrument, and then I lost it. The cameras really focused on me then! This year, I know what to expect so I hope I can keep my cool. |

Yeah, I think I'd have lost it too!!!! I hate that stupid tune.
Good on you Rhonda for making a special day for those who don't have the opportunities of those more fortunate. I do admire you for this.
Now, to answer the OP. I celebrate xmas because of social conditioning. When I'm in the UK a consequence of this is that I am drunk & overdrawn at the bank - when overseas, I'm homesick & p1ssed off.
The madness & enthusiasm put into xmas is exactly that - MADNESS!
(although it's damn good fun for the kids)

I don't hate Christmas, but since I'm not a Christian, I don't celebrate it. I try to live like every day is Christmas to a certain extent. Peace and goodwill to all humans at all times, you know??
I like having the time off work though...

BB, if it's so bad, get out!!!!! The great thing about being here is the ability to say when you're going to leave. Even if you have a contract, whats the point of staying somewhere where you feel so unhappy?? And if it's making YOU feel so unhappy, why did you advertise for them????
IMO, you should go "home", find a grammar book and do some practice over the festive period... |

BB, if you hate grammar so much you should maybe think about a change in career. |
